August's Photography Assignments: "Self Portrait" and "Curves"
Please be sure to read the rules before posting your contributions! Muchos gracias folks.
Theme #1: "Self Portrait"
A self portrait that preferably depicts who you are.
Theme #2: "Curves"
Does this one need an explanation? Shoot some curves!
Rules:
Ending Date: August 31st
This isn't a competition, just a themed assignment for those who wish to participate. The only reason there is a due date is to keep the thread from going on and on. Feel free to PM me with options for other themes.
Constructive Criticism
The point of limiting criticism to Constructive Criticism to to keep people from just going "wow, your photo sucks" without offering a means for improvement. You could go "The composition just isn't doing it for me, maybe try moving the subjects face to the left a few inches." It would also nice and helps people receive CC better if you balance a negative with a positive such as "Well the lighting is nice, but the composition just isn't doing it for me, maybe try moving the subjects face to the left a few inches." or "I like the composition overall, but the busy background distracts me from the subject's face.'

haha, I like the foreshadowing.
I played around a lot to see if I could come up with anything I liked better, but ultimately the shots I took a few days ago that got the general nod of approval from Matt already are what I've decided to post. I had trouble coming up with anything I liked more, and the next few weeks are going to be super busy...so I think these are the 'ones'. The pics are a little edgy-but I'm never planning on becoming the president or anything-so I think I'm in the clear there. All taken with my D90, as usual (why yes, I am posting these at nearly 5 am). Feedback and constructive criticism are always appreciated.
Curves/self-portrait:

Self-potrait:

edit: I just wanted to add I feel like the self-portrait photo is symbolic of the duality I feel in being both a woman who very much wants a family someday, as well as someone who is an academic and also wants a career. Sometimes I feel like I have to make a decision between career and eventual family, and it makes me feel very restricted. The 'bound and gagged' idea came to mind because this has been a really transitional point in my life, yet in some ways I also feel very restricted and unsure of which direction I will end up going in life and it makes me feel really helpless.
The curves photo I also wanted to mention is very representative of how I feel about my body. On one hand I embrace it, and on another I saw the ribbon as almost 'self-hating', essentially cutting myself in half in the picture, or tying myself off. On another it was accentuating, which is the side of me that embraces my body.

Well, no one else seems to be saying how their self portrait depicts who they are, but here's what I was going for. I often time will ignore whats going on with me for the sake of being conducive to the lives of those around me. If I'm exhausted or sick I'll ignore it and keep plugging away at work or plans with friends. I'm also a multifaceted individual. Those that know me know that I'm usually a fun loving person and joke around a lot, but I can turn on a dime when its time to get serious.
My other idea for a self portrait was to stitch a few different shots together of me doing what I love (music, beer connoisseur, gear head) but I wasn't quite sure where I'd have enough room to pull that off. I may still do it in the future.

Marit, like I said before, I really like the curves shot! You could really have some fun with the lighting on that one, but it'd be easiest with two people (model+photographer).
