Good morning, friends! :)
On my bucket list is attending the Merrie Monarch festival in Hilo, Hawai'i. Every year around Easter, the festival's purpose "is the perpetuation, preservation, and promotion of the art of hula and the Hawaiian culture through education. The festival is considered the world's premier forum for people of all ages to display their skills and knowledge of the art of ancient and modern hula." They have competitions for group kane (men) and group wahine (women) performances in both kahiko (traditional) and 'auana (modern) hula, and individual performances for the Miss Aloha Hula competition. The amount of preparation and time commitment that goes into learning these hula is mind-blowing. Some competitors train with their halau (dance school) for years often starting from just after they learn to walk, all culminating in this one performance. Enjoy! 1st Place Wahine Kahiko (women's traditional) Hula 1st Place Wahine 'auana (women's modern) Hula Still trying to find decent res videos of the Kane and Miss Aloha Hula performances. |
Welcome to yesterday on Jalopnik lol
Can't stand Jalopnik or Gawker in general for that matter. |
Buy cheap wheels, get expensive results

I've never seen Rays Engineering wheels give like that before. Then again that guy did say he had 14 race days on those wheels, so I can see why the wheels would start to crack from all that stress. |
This. Almost NEVER on either site.
I used to like Jalopnik a lot more when Gawker-media was much more hands off. It's less and less car news and more and more junk gone viral, car related. |

I tried to provide a little culture and got crickets.
I've never seen Rays Engineering wheels give like that before. The olelo (words or speak) at the beginning of each kahiko is, for lack of a better word, a summary of the story or history of the mele (song) that is about to be performed. Not only does she execute it flawlessly, she does it with amazing speed. ****, I can't even speak English that fast. It's a way of showing your mastery of the olelo. This is, then, extended to the hula itself since the hula is the physical (versus verbal) conveyance or expression of the mele. Master the olelo, master the hula.
For each kahiko, the dancers are judged on a whole gambit of categories -- the power and strength of delivery, accuracy of moves in expressing the olelo of the kahiko, fluidity of the movements, etc. Kayli Ka'iulani Carr kahiko: Her 'auana (modern), in complement to her kahiko, is a display of grace and captures the emotion of the mele, not only in her movement, but in her facial expressions as well. Kayli Ka'iulani Carr 'auana: One review I read called her performances something that is almost never used to describe a hula: perfect. |
Kobe's last game, Warriors might set the best record in the NBA tonight. What a day.
