I would be down for some lessons too!
Another idea is if one of the experts wanted to give us a mission to take a certain kind of picture, we can all go out take a lot of pictures, post one, and get some constructive criticism.

and as for laguna seca, on big days photographers with credentials are given vests. some parts of the track are behind lock gates as well and the combo are only given to people with credentials. laguna seca is actually a decent place to shoot from without credentials. you can get a pretty tight crop of a car with a 300mm lens at the cork screw. the fences around the track are only about 5ft tall, so if you're tall enough you clear them easily.
i never used a tripod for sports (actually i never use a tripod other than long exposure stuff). on my 300 i'll use a monopod only because i get pretty tired caring it. when i can i wouldn't even want to use a monopod. i find i can't move as fast with it on the camera or lens.

when i had slower focusing cameras, i would use pre-focus. easy to do with track events since most drivers will hit the same spot on the track every time they come around. autox, rallyx it's harder since space is limited and everything happens so much faster. yes, i find that cars seem to be moving faster in autox than at the track. i feel that you have a lot of time to react at the track since you can see things coming, but at an autox 10 different things can be happening to a car for a corner.

cool thread. I just grabbed a nikon_d80 with a stock 18-55 lens and a 55-200mm VR as a second lens. I regret getting this combo as I realize I could have accomplished the range and quality of these two lens in one with the Nikon 18-200mm VR lens. Not to mention the 18-55mm lens just looks cheapy and I would rather have the build quality found on the 18-200mm VR. But hands down I love my d80. I do not have access to my pictures right now but I'll be sure to share them later.

just an FYI. someone asked about a place to host images. i use a couple of different ones. for sharing with friends and posting on i-club and forums, i find www.photobucket.com as the best. for selling images when i do a wedding, event, or family portraits, i use www.photoreflect.com
check them out.

and i use photobucket on forums/friends or for quick resizing lol. i've got a flikr account, but im not liking it that much. once i get my editing done or at least setup my comp to put the "actions" on all my photo's i'd like to get a better site to host on (that allows more than 5MB pictures) i'm normally shooting in RAW format at 3488x2616 so the unedited versions are 15-25MB and my edited versions are like 7-10MB!!! upload time sucks

You don't need to know too much to edit them. Just playing with levels saturation exposure are all pretty straight forward. But if you want to create stuff in photoshop, that is a whole other level.
