is it bright daddy?

drelord Mar 14, 2003 03:48 PM

I made them out of a few led's and a clear twistie thingie off some miniblinds. there's some how-to's on the net. I was thinking of doing a how-to write up on this for the stock wrx headlight if i get motivated, but i didn't know hom much interest there was. I've yet to see another car in oklahoma with these besides my friend's "show-car" civic. notice the "", i emphasise sarcasim here. he was the guinea pig to make sure i could do it on a stock headlight. uh, i don't know if that was a joke, but, no they're not that bright, just accent lighting. cool to stop at sonic on a cruising strip, kill the lights and wait for people to start lining up askin how to get theirs.. people have offerered me as much as $150 per headlight to do this, but i like being the only one around town with them, so i haven't done anyone's yet. yah, i know i'm selfish. :monkey:

derlord - a couple of people from maxima.org have done this to their 2k2/2k3 maximas and it shows much better then the pics you posted not to rain on your parade, but see the light lights up in one spot where as on the 5 series the whole ring lights up and i've seen it on a 2k2 maxima where the whole ring lights up as well. I think more R&D is needed to fix how the ring illuminates.

Same ??????????

I'm not claiming to be the first to do it, i know others have, like i said there are write-ups on the net, i just haven't seen one for the rex. The pics are crappy and it was a rush job, so they don't look as good as they should, but the ring does light up all the way around, it is just somewhat suspended inside the housing so that the reflection from the leds is bouncing around making the ring itself look a lot dimmer than it really is, which is why most people that do these use projector headlights. I just started the project, needed to be able to drive the car, so I set the project down, finished it 3/4-assed (not half, mind you!) and haven't had time to tidy things up.

Suuuure, you're not trying to rain on my parade... but it's a diy mod that honestly only cost me $10 - $15 and some time, so it's obviously not going to look like the 5 series comes from the factory or with the aftermarket $XXX fiber optics kits. And i've seen lots of other cars on the net with them, so like i said i didn't claim to be the first to do it, in fact there is some guy with a green rex and morrette headlights with "angel eyes" too, but not with stock lights. As far as R&D goes...I'm not trying to sell anything, so have at it if you wanna yank your headlights off and play with them for a few days. they actually look really good in person, so i'm not too worried about it.

sorry to post whore but if you put the LED's into the ends of the rod while its still hot it will be WAY brighter:D Like this Matrix I did

your car is Screaming I"M PISSED!!!!

drelord Mar 19, 2003 08:52 PM

I tried it that way too, and they actually turned out brighter the way i did it (dremel'd the end of the rod till the led fit perfect). believe me, they're very bright, stoned people often mistake them for headlights, i think the problem is i went from a crappy 1.5MB jpg to a reduced quality, crappy (under 51kb) jpg. I'm a bad cameraman, but I'll take them out and tidy them up a bit and have someone that doesn't have shaky hands take the pics since my car is out of commision at the moment anyway.. (waiting on my control arm, sway bar, strut, wheel and new yokohama's in the mail).

who's car were you referring to (looks pissed)? mine or the matrix?
