My 2002 WRX

I've been working on this for 2 years now but never established a thread to keep track of the project. I started out with an 02 WRX sedan with 83k miles. Nearly bone stock with the exception of a KartBoy short shift lever, and Whiteline swaybars. Here's what we were working with from day one:

I then went after the handling by picking up some Tein Flex coilovers, 17x9 Work Cr Kais with 255/40 Falken Azenis and KartBoy drop links.

Thanks. I might get a vf34 - I haven't done enough research yet to make any sort of decision.

In all of the instructions and installation notes I found online everyone seemed to mention a necessary modification to the hard pipe that connects to the pump outlet in order for the (bigger) walboro pump to fit.

I was shocked to see that mine mated right up and did not require any modifications. Just wanted to share that with you since you'll be running into that soon enough.

My APS 65mm CAI came today. I bought it from Ruehl, and would like to mention what an incredible packing job he did. He's got a few other items for sale, so buy with confidence.

The intake is quite heavier in gauge than I was expecting, but am quite content with the construction. I also thought the raised coolant-line holder was a nice touch, where as some intakes don't accomodate the coolant hoses, or hold them right to the body of the intake (SPT).

Without further ado, here's how it went

(About the missing grill: I started to think that I needed to remove the bumper in order to get this thing in because I didn't realize I could just force the intake through the opening from the engine bay :brick:)

The plan is to media blast it and powder coat it black when I'm back at home for Thanksgiving break.

I'm currently waiting on my GrimmSpeed 3 port EBCS (should come Monday). If anyone wants to buy my GrimmSpeed MBC speak up!

Once I get that set up I'll be taking the car in for a tune.

Sexy car, those wheels look really good!

akdmx 10-26-2010 10:27 AM

Grimmspeed 3 port EBCS came yesterday. Just plugged this thing in this morning.

Nicelooking boost solenoid. NIce to see tht grimmspeed isn't just labeling a grainger unit as a grimmspeed product like many other manufacturers. +1 Grimmspeed! Nice mods to you!

whitewrx408 10-26-2010 10:50 AM

So you just installed a Grimmspeed EBCS. i have a prodrive EBCS similar to yours. but i was told i don't need to install it on my stock turbo. am i wrong. b/c your running a stock turbo. help me out. LOL

Some people have had issues running the stock EBCS with high boost pressures, so when people say that an aftermarket solenoid isn't necessary for the TD04, they are simply operating under the assumption that you are running low boost on your TD04.

I didn't have problems holding boost on my factory solenoid, but I upgraded for a different reason. The factory 2 port solenoid is bleed-based system, in which you will lose a little bit of pressure (notice the T-fitting routes back to the inlet). This 3-port solenoid is supposed to build boost slightly faster, and have better throttle response. Ultimately my goal is to cut down on turbo lag and maximize low RPM power as much as possible, so I'm resorting to marginal improvements like this to help me get there.

So to answer your question:
-Do you need to upgrade your solenoid on the stock turbo?
Probably not
-Might you benefit slightly from upgrading anyway?
I hope so :owws:
whitewrx408 10-26-2010 12:12 PM

Thanks!! I might install it right now. Also where are you located in the Bay Area? I might want to buy your MBC. im currently waiting to buy some injectors so i can run my VF-39. and would like to have a MBC when ready.

Thanks,
Michael

I have not. The dyno tune is the next item on my to-do list. I'll make sure to post up the dyno sheet.

Anything else done to your car?

Aspen White Wrx FTW!

Had the car tuned by Ed at EQ today. I'll post the dyno chart if he puts it in his updates thread. Anyway, the car did 219.3hp at 5850rpm, and 220.9 ft lbs at 4000rpm. I wanted to be making more than stock STis, and it looks like I am according to Ed's dyno disclaimer:
Stock 02-05 WRX - 155-165whp
Stock 04-07 STI - 215-220whp
Stock 08-11 STI - 190-200whp
It is also worth noting that it was 95.8* (not sure where this temp was taken, but that's what it says on the dyno print out).

I'm diggin' the red turbo inlet hose that matches the STi TMIC :giggity:

Got some new bits and pieces today:

Picked all this up from TiC
-Kartboy rear diff mount bushings
-Kartboy rear subframe bushings
-Kartboy "Botox bolts" rear subframe lockdown bolts

In other news, I'm getting a weird clunking sound from my steering rack. Here is a video of the sound:

The sound is coming from the steering rack when making quick right turns, particularly on the passenger side near the bushing. I checked the 4 big bolts and they are tight. The bushings aren't obviously torn or anything, although I definitely can feel the rack move a little when the steering wheel is turned quickly.

Anyone know what could be causing this sound? Is the steering rack done?
stock 2011 wrx 230whp lol why the hell do they have more power then the sti lol
230whp on which dyno? If an '11 WRX made 230 on the EQ dyno it would equate to less than half as much drivetrain loss (by percentage) as the pre-08 STi.

I agree though -- it's strange how the WRX horsepower increases year after year by so much more than the STi.

04caliwrx 06-18-2011 05:47 PM

^ i think it was on ed's dyno, they had a stock 2011 wrx i think it made 219 or 229whp on his dyno day

The stock 2011 WRX did 218.8/227.7
