Chicken's Crosstrek

I had been wanting a Crosstrek for a few years.. I almost pulled the trigger and got a 2017 in the tan khaki, but decided to wait as the 2018's were going to be the new platform.

After seeing the new specs, I decided to wait. About a month in a half ago, I put an order in!

2018 Premium Crystal White Pearl with 6-speed manual with black interior.

Add-ons straight from the dealer are going to be:
-Sunshade
-Auto-dimming mirror with homelink
-Body side molding
-Rear bumper cover
-All weather floor mats
-STi roof spoiler
-crossbars
-rear seat back protector

The main reason I wanted the side molding was 1) it will help with door dings in parking lots B) I plan on getting the whole front clip and the first half of the doors clear bra'd. I think the molding will be a nice "line" to bring the clear bra up to and somewhat hide the edge along most of the doors.[b]----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

stupidchicken03 09-15-2017 07:11 AM

Got a call Monday afternoon that the car was in. I went in that evening and finished all the paperwork. Had 4 miles on it when I picked it up :) Not too bad for the night before my birthday :joker:

So far ive really enjoyed the car. A couple things that I probably would not have gotten if I saw them first
-all weather floor mats
-subaru sunshade

I really like all weather mats, but these are kinda lack luster. Ill probably end up getting something aftermarket like weathertech or husky. Something that has more coverage and go up the side of the footwells a bit.

The sunshade is build nice, and seems like it will block heat out, but its a PITA to fold. Its more of an accordion style that has to be folded up a certain way to sit flat together. It does not cover the entire windshield because I think they cut them all to fit with eyesite just in case the car had it. Might get an aftermarket one as well. The ones (forgetting the brand name right now) i got for my civic and STi are amazing. Cut to fit perfecting and make a HUGE difference on heat in the car.

stupidchicken03 09-15-2017 07:12 AM

Wheels and tires showed up yesterday :D

Method 502 VT-spec (15x7+15)
BFGoodrich ALL-TERRAIN T/A KO2 235/75/15

Unfortunately did not get to test fit them, although I dont think they will fit as is anyways. BUT I do have an order in with Anderson Design Fabrication for one of their lift kits. I also couldnt test fit because the car got dropped off at Detail Maniac to get the entire front clip, and part of the doors clear bra'd :)

I dig it. I'm still sourcing the bits in need to give the WRX and 1" in front and 1 3/4" in back using JDM STi Forester bits and a small spacer in the rear. Then I'm looking at new wheels with205/65/15 or stick with my volks and get 215/65/16s... we'll see

I would love to go for a ride alone to see how the tires feel. Im still thinking of what i want to do with my crosstrek

stupidchicken03 09-21-2017 06:57 AM

Man from Detail Maniac sent me a couple teasers yesterday on the clear bra. Looks amazing so far! The entire panels are getting covered and the end of the film is getting wrapped over the edges of the panels so there are no visible seam lines. As always, HIGHLY suggest Detail Maniac if you're in the surrounding Sacramento area!

My buddy at work is lifting his 2017 1" also. He just got rims similar to those.

stupidchicken03 09-23-2017 07:53 AM

The 13-17 are an easy 2" lift.

Of course the 18 are on the new global platform and ADF didnt want to changes the geometry too much with a full 2", hence just 1.5. BUT since the fender wells are larger, i was able to get a larger tire as well, so more high :D :p

stupidchicken03 09-25-2017 07:18 AM

Ok.. a lot of updates coming as I did a lot of smaller things on the car this weekend..

Including getting the car back from Detail Maniac after they installed clear bar on the whole front clip, and then some :D

Man and his team doing what they do!

I ordered a bunch of LED replacements from Diodedynamics for the interior.
I swapped out the map lights, dome light, cargo light, and license plate lights... HUGE difference.

EDIT:

For the license plate lights, I got the "Pure White 5k" and "HP5 92 lumens"
https://www.diodedynamics.com/license-plate-leds-for-2013-2017-subaru-xv-crosstrek-pair.html

They dont list these for the 2018, but they are the same as the 2017..
The map lights and dome lights are both the same thing
"Cool white" in SMF6 (94 lumens)
https://www.diodedynamics.com/map-light-leds-for-2013-2016-subaru-xv-crosstrek-pair.html

Also not listed for under the 2018, but again the same, is the rear cargo light.
"Cool white" in SMD12 Board (118 lumens)

Got a couple of these cigarette plug to dual USB things. I installed one in the cubby under the HVAC controls, and the other in the center console armrest. Ive got future plans in my head for the cubby area. So my thought was to get some longer cables (1 iPhone and 1 micro USB) and plug them into that outlet and run them into the glovebox. So if a passenger ever needs to charge their phone, either cable is ready to go there.

My fiance bought a new Kia Sorento earlier this year and I bought a Yakima loadwarrior basket. I knew I was going to be getting a Crosstrek at some point, so I wanted to be able to use the basket on either vehicle. I mounted and wired a LED bar to the front of the basket with weatherpack connectors so I could plug it into both cars. Here is the full write up on how I got it set on her car: LED light bar with cargo basket - Kia Forum Ill be doing something very similar for the Crosstrek, but next level lol.

So I adjusted the crossbars on the roof and got the basket mounted. So now there is transferable lighting, storage, and ski/snowboard attachments for either SUV :)

These are what I bought. The basic set is like $8, but I upped the output to the "Pure White 5k" and "HP5 92 lumens" so it was $20 for the pair.

It looks beefy and I cant wait to get it on! Ill be working with a local YouTuber and we'll be doing a installation video of the kit :) Ill post a link once its uploaded later on ;)

Then for giggles I decided to test fit one of the wheels even before the lift kit got installed. Im pretty sure I could rock them as is. MIGHT have slight rubbing at full lock, but I decided to wait since the lift is going on real soon.

Then when I got home yesterday, I had the next "mod" waiting for me. I order the "carbon fiber" Cupeez for the door handle area. No doubt this area gets beat up. I decided to give em a try. I got the CF because 1)the black matched the black/white theme of the car, and 2) it matches the interior CF trim.

Install was SUPER easy. Just cleaned the area and made sure it was all dry. Took a hairdryer on high-heat setting for 20-30 seconds to just make them a bit more malleable, then stuck em in!

So today I debadged the trunk. Everything was chrome and no bueno. Removed everything on the left side of the trunk, and replaced the "Crosstrek" on the right side. Ive seen a lot of ppl plasti-dip them black, but when an OEM part exists... why not use it!!? The red 2017 limited edition came standard with black badging. So I found the part number and got it ordered up.

SO MUCH better in my opinion!

Over the weekend mr sybir gave me a new car present . When I bought the STi from him, he gave me an OG white Lathe Werks shift knob for that car.

Well turns out he had the exact same one, but in black! So he gave it to me. I pulled the white one from the STi and tested it in the XT. I think the black works better and stuck with that. But it is nice to know I can swap between them whenever!

The car came with the Subaru all-weather mats, and I was pretty disappointed in them. I had Subaru mats in my wrx and they were fantastic, these not so much.

So I ordered up the Weathertech liners for front/rear. They are the exact same as the 2017 Impreza. They came in yesterday and I swapped em out, so much better!

stupidchicken03 10-09-2017 07:41 AM

Got the main piece of the next project in the mail on Saturday :)

Ive gotten tired of running individual switches into the car every time I add an another accessory. It adds up to being a lot of wire being ran and individual switches all over the cabin, especially after running out of the blank slots on the drivers side dash.

I got this S-Tech system from Team Tech Offroad located in Colorado. Ill be making a bracket to mount the 6 switches below the HVAC controls. I might make another bracket for under the hood to mount the power block as well (unless I can get lucky and it will mount to two existing bolts, but I doubt it lol).

So here is the system, i just wired up 3 of the 6 toggle switches to get a feel of it.

Here are the switches I got. Dual LED so they will be partially illuminated while off and fully when switched on. All of them are red colored to match the Speedo/Tach. I got 4 of them labeled for the future plans, and 2 blanks as im not sure what i would want to fill them with yet ;)

That's kinda neat.

You get 6 switches that feed into one fat cable that goes into a box with fuses and relays?
That's kinda neat.

Yup.

So now to power an accessory, I only have to run 1 wire for the power (to the distribution block), the other end just needs to be grounded wherever that accessory is.

I originally wanted an S-Pod that is basically the same thing, but instead of all the single cables (as 1 big one) going into the cab, they made it all work with an ethernet cable. But that system is over double what I paid for this... so...

JourdanWithaU 10-09-2017 08:55 AM

Ethernet cable is clever.

Could probably do something similar with 9 conductor speed wire.

stupidchicken03 10-09-2017 08:59 AM

I just hate wiring in general. So this was simple enough for me

hehe.

Ive been thinking about putting in an ARB single tank compressor where the spare tire should go (I took it out since its pointless).

They are rated to fill a 35" tire in about 2 minutes :)
The dual tank ones are baller and I think you can run air tools off of them. But its more than I want to spend, and space might be too tight for it.

Been working on the switch panel for an hour here and there after work. Made a template out of cardboard and then cut it out of some 23 gauge plate steel. Slowly filed it down till it was a nice tight fit that Im happy with. Yesterday I stenciled the individual switches onto the panel.

Might be able to do a little more tonight, but after that, I probably wont get to mess with it till Sunday. Also working on a template for a under-hood bracket to hold the power distribution box.

Here's where Im at currently.

The interior trim comes standard with "carbon fiber" design.

A few years ago I picked up an old office desk for like $20 on Craigslist. Painted the back and drawer faces black, and ordered a huge sheet of CF wrap. I wrapped the tops and side trims.

Ive got a decent amount of leftover wrap that ive been picking at over the years for small things. Ill prolly just wrap the panel with that :)

I had some left over "carbon fiber" vinyl laying around from an old project a few years ago. I decided to wrap the panel in that to match the rest of the interior trim. Came out pretty nice. After I put it on, I noticed there is a slight warp in the vinyl near the bottom. Kinda bugs me, but its good enough (at least for now lol).

Got my mudflaps!
I like RA, and have had them on previous cars, but I cant justify the price for what they are. With the new body style, no one had anything currently available so I had to hurry up and wait. This gave me more time to search around for alternative options. I came across RokBloks and everyone ive seen online who's gotten them, have been happy. So I decided to give em a shot! Hoping this weekend ill be able to throw em on!

My other 32" LED light bar had come in a couple weeks ago and its been sitting patiently in the garage. My next order from Lamin-x arrived yesterday as well. I bought the 32" yellow film strip to put over the LED bar. This will be going behind the lower portion of the bumper. Same yellow tint as the fog lights. Im going to wait to put this in till im completely done with the power block and running wires to all the switches.

yea all the factory stuff just isnt long enough.

The RB I'd say in a right in-between the RA hard plastic and urethane.

They feel stiff, but will flex. So they arnt going to be blowing around in the wind, but will give hitting rocks/curbs/whatever.

In the midst of my working in the backyard today, I took a break and make progress on the under-hood bracket. Got it all cut out, smoothed edges and test fit.

But a bend in it, and test fit the power supply. Clears the hood while its closed no issue.

After everything was fitting proper, I shot it with a couple coats of truck bed-liner to cover it.
While it was drying, I had to run out to get a water-roller to compact all the top soil I wheel-barrowed into the backyard today.
So putting the back of the car to good use!

Finished product for the bracket. Hoping maybe Friday or early morning Sat or Sun I can have some free time to run all the wiring.

Why are they wired in series? Are they all on the same fuse? How many amps is this rated for?

stupidchicken03 10-23-2017 09:15 AM
Why are they wired in series? Are they all on the same fuse? How many amps is this rated for?
They all have individual fuses inside that distribution box. If I remember correctly, they are rated for up to 30amps.

Black - ground
Red - power
Blue - LED power
Wire X - individual colors to switches to give/cut power.

stupidchicken03 10-24-2017 07:00 AM

Got home yesterday from work and test mounted all the wiring and plugged in the switches to a temp LED light bar (just to make sure everything worked before putting it in it's final resting place).

Everything worked great! I ran the power to the battery and negative to the ground on the drivers side strut tower base (where the battery grounds out). The secondary power wire (smaller one) I ran straight to the battery over an accessory fuse so I can turn on any of the lights/accessories without the car running. I just have to turn them off when Im done ;) The smaller blue wire I ran to an accessory fuse as that wire is for the smaller "always on" bottom LED for the switches.

I ran the 6 accessory power lines under the bracket I made and they are, for now, sitting between the drivers strut tower and main fuse block (as seen in the pics).

Honestly so far, the hardest part of all this was running the lead cable into the cabin. I ran it through the wirewall with the main harness. You can see it in the second pic where I ziptied the cable to the brake line to keep it out of the way and it continues on through.

The last picture is from under the dash. The pedal seen is the gas pedal. Directly above that is where the main harness comes into the car. I slit a hole in the grommet to pull the lead wire through. You can see it drops down and then I tucked it behind the carpeting.

Thats as far as I got yesterday. Today Im hoping to run the lead wire into the dash to come up into the cubby. Then I can connect the switches and set the plate in place!

Chris GTO TT 10-24-2017 09:35 AM

Are you going to switch to a deep cycle battery? Or do you have other plans to prevent stranding yourself from a dead battery?

stupidchicken03 10-24-2017 10:44 AM

Not sure how I would stand myself with a dead battery, unless I forgot to turn a light off..

stupidchicken03 10-25-2017 06:58 AM

More done yesterday. Tore the center console apart to run the wiring up into the cubby.

There is a flat plastic "plate" that clips into the cubby to make the bottom of it. I decided that this will be the sacrificial piece that I cut into. It will be cheap/easy to replace in the future if I ever need to.

On top of that, there is a small rubber mat to keep things from rolling around in the cubby. Again, this would be cheap/easy to replace if need be, so a simple X cut to let the wires run through it from under.

stupidchicken03 10-25-2017 07:10 AM

I also had this idea running around my head since I got the car. Since I am enclosing the cubby, the cigarette adapter is getting closed off. So I installed one of the dual USB charging ports in it, then got 2 six foot cables (one for iPhone and one for Android), and ran them behind the dash and into the glove box. So that port is no longer "wasted" and the passenger can pop open the glove box to charge either type of phone they have.

Everything put back together, showing the cables coming in/out of the cubby. Now the braided cable to the back of the switches, has maybe 2ft of length. So I just wove it around in a zig-zag and everything fit nicely.

Im OCD so I cable tied the cables together while they're not being used in the glove box. Easy to store and not get tangled up. There is enough length on both of them where the passenger can be sitting all the way back in their seat and still charge their phone while holding it, or put it in the cupholders to sit and charge.

I installed the switches yesterday, but it does not want to sit in place anymore as it did earlier. I did not take into account all the wiring behind the switches and the extra length of the lead wire in the cubby. So it has some "spring" tension behind it. Not a lot, but just enough to where it will not sit in the cubby by itself. Originally I planned on making a couple brackets along the sides of the cubby and mount them to it. I was going to use some strong magnets and glue them onto the back of the aluminum bracket so the switch panel will just "stick" to it. I think ill be going back to that idea, or something similar.

So im one step closer with having this all done, just small details to iron out!.

newyorkreload 10-25-2017 07:39 AM

Nicley done.

I also forgot, there is another cigarette lighter power plug in the armrest. I also put a dual USB charging adapter in that. I ran another cable through the armrest and center console up under the dash. As of right now, its just sitting behind the drivers side fuse panel.

I figure that if I ever decide to get a window phone mount, I will have charging as an option there.

I have these things going on too.

I put a 5 port USB adapter in the center. 3 cables routed out the slot in the lid, Lighting (My phone), micro USB (Work phone), and mini USB (GoPro).

I have a 2 port USB adapter in the cubby plug. That has a lighting that goes up to the top of my A pillar for when I put my phone on my windshield.

I hardwired one in the STi that comes up from behind the dash on the drivers side for a window mount.

I liked the idea of just USB cable and not having to tap into anything if I didnt need to.
