Can I run the 4-spd auto without the rear end hooked up??

the reason I ask this is I (like alot of others) want to do a EJ20T conversion into a 1972 porsche 914. but I want to use the stock subaru transmission. It is disigned to handle the stock subaru HP. Also the stock 914 transmission does not handle horsepower well and I would have to buy an adapter (which is about $600). Long story short could I run the transmission with the rear drive shaft unhooked and capped?

No, you can not run the transmission without anything hooked up and expect any sort of reliable lifespan. You may consider sourcing an early mode Impreza or Legacy FWD transmission and use it. They were available in both 5MT and 4EAT varieties. from 90-97.

I guess it is time to show my ignorance... there is a 93 legacy for sale with a turbo. that will not work??

by FWD you mean front wheel drive? right?

All Subaru turbo models are/were AWD. Yes, by FWD I do mean Front Wheel Drive. The engine will work fine, but the transmission in the 93 is definitely AWD.

The problem with the FWD Subaru transmissions is similar to the issue you have with the stock 914 transmission. I think the most HP that the FWD models were equipped with was 137 or 142HP. The EJ22T in the 93 is 160, and 181lb/ft of torque. You could probably run it reliably to 200HP, but you'd probably be pushing 250lb/ft of torque at that point, and i'd expect stuff to start breaking on a 5MT. A 4EAT might be rebuilt to withstand more HP, but at that point I'm sure you could find a better solution.

I hear that you can use the 4wd trans from any subie and have the center diff welded up. You then have a strong 4wd trans that acts as a 2wd. Perpect for the 914. Good luck.
