STi: Climate control & HVAC is the worst POS ever! Dealer & SOA refuse to fix!

Climate control????? Yeah right!!!! When it's cold out, all my climate control will do is pump out hot air all the time regardless of how I set the temp control dial and how long it's been running. When I set the control to AUTO just one notch above 65 all the way on the blue so it's at about "66" it pumps out hot air until you are about to die from heat exhaustion. I can drive the car for an hour, it must be 95 degrees in there and it still pumps out hot air. If I put it just one notch down to "65" then all I get is cold outside air. If I put it on recirculate then the windows fog up. If I put the fan control dial on one of the manual fan speed selections and set it all the way to the left in the blue on "66" I still get hot air. Why can't I control the mix between the hot and cold air ? The temp control dial adjusts like this: OFF to hot - Scalding hot. There is no in between.
So I basically have only 4 choices when it gets cold out:
1) OFF
2) Hot air
3) Hotter air
4) Cold air
My dealer says it is working fine and so does SOA. How is it working fine when you set the control dial all the way to the left where it's in the blue and all you get is hot air regardless if it's in AUTO or not? On "65" it's off and cold, on "66" it's too hot, on "70" even hotter and on "80" you will die. What kind of design is that?????????

I took a house thermometer from my garage which is accurate and matches the readings I get on the outside air guage on the car within 2 degrees. I also took the temperature probe which is used to monitor the air temp in the ceiling vents from my job which tested accurate within 1 degree with the "day automation" computer readings in the main computer. These are the results:
I used the house thermometer to measure air temp in the car in multiple locations which weren't effected by direct air blowing from the vents. I used the temperature probe to directly measure the vent air temp from the center air vents.
Started the car in the garage and the temp was 38 degrees inside and ouside the car. Put the car in "AUTO" climate control on the lowest possible setting without getting outside air (i.e. OFF or "65" degrees) and that according to the dial would be "66" degrees. I drove off and the outside air temp was a cold 15 degrees, after the car warmed up to temp the AUTO climate turned on like it's supposed to. The vent air temperature peaked at 130 degrees and slowly cooled down to 80 degrees after 10 - 15 minutes, at which time the interior temp in the car was 74 degrees. The vent air never got cooler then 80 degrees, and even in the "bi - level" setting which is supposed to send slightly warmer air to the feet and cooler air to the top vents. So basically the coolest I can have the car and still have the heat on is somewhere around 74 degrees with the vent air not blowing any cooler then 80 degrees. With the temperature control dial in the next coolest setting (65) the vent air went down to less then 30 degrees! Plus the A/C compressor doesn't work when the outside air temp goes below 32 degrees, which coupled with the above problem can explain why I have difficulty defogging the windows in certain weather situations.
Summary:
When it's cold I basically have only 3 options:
1) 30 degree air
2) 80 degree air (after 130 degree air blows for a while and settles at 80 in 10 - 15 minutes)
3) OFF and recirculate interior, but this causes window fogging shortly
The problem is 80 degree air, after a while becomes too hot. If you have the heat blowing at your feet, they start to sweat, then you switch to the top vents, but your upper body gets too hot, then bi-level, then shut it off, then 30 degree air, then turn it on, then it goes to 130 degrees, then it cools off to 80. "wash, rinse and repeat" How can this be called climate control?
I have one more setting to try which may work. If I set the control to 66 and just blow the air on the windshield (full defog) maybe that will help. I'll try that tomorrow.
Either way I've never had this problem with any other car. I'm so sick of the dealer and SOA trying to tell me this is "OK". Just admit the system sucks and makes the car uncomfortable for it's passengers and I'll shut up about it, but don't try and say the system works good, because the facts show it's too damn hot and there is NOTHING that can be done about it.

Actually, the air conditioner in my 2002 WRX (non-STI) is exactly the same way. If you have it on the "cool" side all the way, it will always blow cool air. If you have it on the 50/50 or past the halfway mark towards the "hot" side of the dial, it just occasionally turns the cool air off every once in a while, blowing air that is the temp of the air pipes (HOT) instead.
This is exactly the way that heat or cooling works in a house. Your heater or A/C for your house only puts out one temperature of air. The overall air temp is controlled by simply turning the AC or heat on until the overall ambient temperature matches with the desired thermostat settings, and then it shuts off.
The AC and heat in your car work the same way; the difference is, there is no automatic thermostat.

the auto functioni seems kinda cheesy. i would stick with the manual funcion. i have a 2003 WRX and have no problems w/ my climate contols.

I have a similar problem on my Forester XT the thing is the Auto climate control in our Outback VDC works like a charm, so I know they can get it right if they want to

Could any of you measure the temp of the vent air after the car and cabin warms up and tell me if you can get the air any lower then 80 degrees when it's set at "66" or ONE notch up from 65? I don't see how the car can maintain the indicated 66 degree temperature setting if the vent air won't get any cooler then 80. So you guys who are saying your systems are working properly, are you able to get the air any cooler then 80? (not the 65 setting though which is just outside air)

Well I pretty much never use my AC, just the vents with the heating core. It works fine for adjusting temperature of incoming air.
Zoso are you having issue _without_ the AC? If so open up your dash and poke around. Famliarize yourself with how the controls work and attach themselves to the various vents. Its not really rocket science. Maybe you have a bent or fallen connecting rod (no, not the piston-bearing kind
).
I have lotsa wires behind the stereo and glovebox. Once something got in the way of the air path switch (the one which indicates sending air to my feet or face, etc) and it was a real bizatch to turn and sometimes wouldnt at all. So I openned it up, found that a wire was grabbing one of the dial-to-vent rods and freed it up. And all was good again.

Well it's not just me as every passenger I've ever had in the car agrees that the air gets to hot and it's impossible to set it at a comfortable temp. The vent air no matter what will never get cooler then 80 degrees and eventually the inside temp of the car reaches that temp. You must turn it off, cool the car down and start the process all over again. Complete B$.
