Noises after Coilover install.
 

I finally finished installing my Megan Racing coils yesterday and now I am hearing "clunking" (for lack of a better word) or spring popping sounds when ever I turn the steering wheel. It sounds as though the springs are moving when I make a turn.

Has anyone had experiences like this after a coilover install and if so how did you solve the problem?

I had problem with those coilovers when I had them on my car. A few other folks I know had the same problem.

Best bet is to double check everything.

I had this issue. make sure everything is tight and even.

is it at all speeds or just slow speeds?

It usually happens when taking turns between 10-25mph. And when I also get a similar sound when driving straight betwen 25-40mph, but not consistently.

check the couplers and make sure they are tight and not broken. If not that, I am not sure.

Yeah, I'm getting the same 'clunking' sound from my front coilover. I have BC racing though.

It only clunks when I turn the steering wheel at a stop though.

Might be the pre-load

I had the same issue when I installed my stance coilovers. I went to 3 different shops and they told me the same thing...its normal. now they said that if its a constant grinding noise, then you have problems.

NO NO NO....... take them out!!!!! i had the same problem.... and i took them out and looked... oops strut moutn wasnt on correctly..... which casues the spring to rotate on the bottom perch, which can dmage your springs.. or possibly cause them to come off..... did you line up the bottom mounting bolts to the upper perch? there are three holes on the top perch... the middle one should line up in the middle of the bottom moutning bracket... go here for more info.... Forgive me iif this is a dumb question, but does this apply to coilovers too?

i read the same info on a coil over install as well..... best to check i would say... your springs should not be turning.. and what you are describing is what was heppening to my car..... just trying ot help....

I know your trying to help, and I greatly appreciate it. I was just unsure if the post from kastle would apply to coilovers thats all. :)

Yeah, your problem is probably in the hat.

ok first of all forget what that other guy said if you have megan's full coilovers. first step double check all the bolts, especially the rears since they may have settled and need to be re-snugged (i know its a pain takin the seats out but do it). second make sure you have the proper preload on the springs. jack the car up and take the wheel off. feel the spring and see if it jiggles up and down at all. if it does or you just want to be sure its good then loosen the two top locking rings untill they are just touching the bottom of the spring (you will need to pull up on the spring till its touching the top mount). then then tighten the main ring back up till you give the spring about 5mm of preload. most clunking is due to improper preload on the spring, the rest usually from improperly secured top hats. if this doesnt work then you may have something bigger wrong. by the way this is the same process on the BC coilovers (they are made by the same people). good luck.

Thanks! I figured out the klunking issue, but the bit you had in the message about the amount of preload helps a lot!
