Need help
i just wondering, after i finish work today when i start my car by turning my steering wheel little bit without moving the car, my idle goes up and down and i hear something. it just happen today is it the steering fluid? I didn't check it when i got home. and couple days ago, i smell burning coming out from the hood its not a smoke but somethings burning. You know when you have a old car after you drove it you smell something burning. So what's the problem of my car? thank you in advance.

typically the idle up you see is because Subaru still use hydraulic power steering on most (if not all) of their US cars. when you turn the wheel, especially at low rpms like idle in parking lot, you will notice the rev climb a little bit. this is the "compensation" the power steering pump has to make sure it doesn't kill the engine. if i'm right, it is pretty old school tech, i think it uses a vacuum switch to raise the idle when it notices the PS pump being used.
sound is prolly just the PS pump and idler pulley working against a load (i.e. pushing the PS fluid thru the lines etc.)
i suppose it couldn't hurt to check your fluid level tho...

it should only make the sound at full lock but again thats normal for a suby. the burning smell could be anything from a leaky seal someplace, to someone mistaking your hoodscoop for a trash can and throwing their half eaten grilled cheese inside. pop the hood and check, look for puddles on the ground, ect.
