Someone refresh my memory on registration....

I will be shipping my cars back in the next few months. I still have Hawaii plates but the tags are expired. When picking up the cars from Sand Island. What do I bring and in what order do I safety and register things? Possible to do this ahead of time (except safety)?

already assuming you have insurance first....

go to safety first....fail for expired registration(blue copy)-
w/blue copy in hand go get registration
after getting registration...go back to same safety check station and gegt the pink and gold copies....

so i can drive off the docks with the car not registered but I have to go straight to safety?

is there a grace period to take care of all this?

thanks

you have 30 days grace period from day of arrival to take care of registration

since you have hawaii tags it a little easier process

do as houdni said and also carry your shipping documents just in case

Yup, thats right. The shipping docs will be your "temp registration" for 30 days. I had a truck shipped over last year and I drove it home from Sand Island and to get it safety checked with no plates at all.

IIRC, you have to pay a maximum of 2 years back taxes to register a car if you didn't turn in the plates. That will come out to ~$600-700 depending on the weight of the car.

You can find out the cost by entering your car's info here:

I'm in the US Army no back taxes to be collected

Sorry but the county of Honolulu will not be receiving money from me to refill the same pot hole every time it rains.
