SOA/SUBARU oil filters now FRAM/Honeywell

Read this on the subaruforester forums that SUBARU will or has halted importing the Japanese Tokyo Roki filters(the black ones) and found a domestic supplier by the name of Honeywell and IIRC they also are involved in making FRAM oil filters. Upon Comparison of both the Japanese Tokyo ROki filters vs. the Honeywell/FRAM oil filters, the Tokyo roki oil filters uses metal frames for its filtration compared to the FRAM oil filters using cardboard type and again iirc, this allows dirty oil to have re-entry into the engine. Might have to call up Rick or maybe Shaggy can fill in more on this topic. Just letting the iclub peeps(HIIC,BAIC,SCIC, etc. etc.) be aware of this move. I've used FRAM on my impreza but only because I was changing oil late at night but havent used it on a constant basis to analyze any performance robbing factors. Other than that, I've used the OEM ones. Might consider using the napa gold filters since they are wix filters or try Mobil 1

Stock up on the old style ones now!

VRT MBasile 11-30-2008 10:12 AM

If honeywell makes fram and now makes SOA ones, that doesn't mean that fram makes SOA filters, it means that SOA filters are made by the same people that may be involved in Fram. Hopefully SOA will still have it made with quality parts. If anyone can get their hands on a "new" one they should have a shop cut it open.

Napa filters ftw!

Nacron 11-30-2008 12:36 PM

Heh, I got one from a guy in the mainland thrown in with the back trim that got mangled by UPS....I should stock up now.

Haole-Pino 11-30-2008 01:54 PM

I use Napa Gold Filters......There just like OEM Roki filters.

xurusaibobx 11-30-2008 08:02 PM

ams oil filters here...

i never in my life would use a Fram filter .... try putting cardboard in oil and see how long it last, now picture that in your engine....pretty much same thing happens in a fram filter...

Napa gold in both my race Miata and my STi. OEM is overrated anyway.

I read about this on nasioc last week some time. Here's a link to the thread that was started by subiegal.

If you take a look at post #74 on page 3, there are comparison pics of the new and old oil filters cut open.

Here's some pic i took of from another site I cant remember,Also heard the h6 filters fit on the '05 wrx, othe N/A powered impreza's, and STi but doesn't fit the 06-07 wrx due to its tilted oil cooler.

From left to right, ALL H4 and SVX then ALL 2000+ H6 and SVX then the new ones. Pictures courtesy of wjmrallyesport.com

So in conclusion, according to the documents and pictures, the 2000+ H6 &SVX filter fits the N/A's, 02-05 wrx, and STi. For further reading, just visit the website listed.

I think subaru parts gave me the smaller black one when I bought it. I have 1 spare because I picked it up with a broken part I got from the mainland.

VRT MBasile 12-02-2008 12:37 AM

Seeing the filter elements pulled out makes me want to write SOA a letter...and continue to send it until I am told why they made the change.

Oh, and please get out of your HIIC bubble, this seriously is something that should be posted in the Subaru General section
