Richard, a little insight???
4th gear pull. Fairly level. On H2 up near my exit.
Boost cut or fuel cut or whatever you call it. I'd say fuel cut because I'm lean there at the end. No knock, no nothing. Needless to say, it scared the stuff outa me.

Hmmm... Interesting! Sounds like you hit fuel cut (caused by overboosting). It's supposed to be set at 20.5 with the UTEC from the factory though.
Maybe your boost readings are artificially low? Did you calibrate your MAP or did you just switch to PSIG?
Looks like you've got your boost building problem sorted out though! SWEET!

Pat,
Make any headway with this? Is it repeatable? Mitch and Wes can tell you about a repeatable "problem" that I managed to create in my fuel map last night.

Mitch's notes read: "Richard is an ***. - means lean. + means rich" I believe.

I calibrated my map so that it is +/-.2 from 0 depending on the weather. I'm on 'absolute' as opposed to gauge.
I haven't gone out today. I was thinking I'd get a chance when some of the crew came up, but it's pissing. To be honest, 1)I'm scared to see if it's repeatable because I have to assume spark was still there but no fuel, and 2)I'm still warm all over from those boost readings.
I'll give you a report as soon as I can.

19psi makes me sort of tingly in the naughty bits too.

When your ECU goes into "fuel cut" the engine doesn't run lean - because the ECU cuts ALL of the fuel.
Not enough fuel for a combustion event (regardless of spark). No combustion event, no rich or lean. It's a dead hole until fuel is re-introduced into the mix.
I've been led to believe the WRX drops fuel and not spark in the event of an overboost.

However, you're right in reading your logs. If the motor went to fuel cut it's possible you'd see "lean" in your AF column.

I was only able to do one 3rd gear pull today and though I didn't log it, no knock....but I'm still sorta scared. I have had zero luck digging into 4th gear.

I'm gonna hijack my own thread.
Rich, what do you think about this boost map? Not so much the values, but the fact that 'Phil', I'm assuming TXS Phil, has values going through all MLPs.

Interesting... Boost is the only map that doesn't reference boost, it references TPS... So you're just mapping boost for lower TPS basically. I don't see how it could hurt if you get the values right - but I get some pretty quick spool with the VF30 now that my fuel map is "getting there".

Richard, another question,
I just got off of the phone with TXS_Phil about the fuel cut problem. His advice was pretty much 'try the gauge' MAP setting. I think he was about to tell me that I need to recalibrate the 'absolute' everytime I want to log if I'm using absolute MAP, but he didn't.
Also, I've readYour Thread on ClubWRX as well as Pace's concerning altitudinal effects, but I can't make heads or tails on which is accurate vs. which to trust.
I know you've said that there is a miniscule difference between the gauge vs. absolute, but looking at my log above, it would seem as if I probably hit cut at 19.7 which is only .8 less than the programmed fuel cut. If I wasn't calibrated correctly and going UP H2, that might be the cause of the mis-readings.
I still don't understand the difference between absolute and gauge.
Last, do you think shooting for 19lbs on 93 octane is worthwhile?

I think 18.5psi on 93 octane is about perfect (there's a reason that TXS went with that boost goal for their Stage 4 map).
I'm glad that Phil and I agree re: the PSIG situation!
Set yourself up for Gauge and see what your logged boost looks like.
The UTEC does not use the PSIA and PSIG terminology correctly. Doing a search on the internet will get you the REAL deal - but won't help in this case as TXS is using a bit of a misnomer (re: PSIG).
Suffice it to say that TXS wants us to use PSIG (if we're anywhere near sea level - which we are) and that will afford us a more accurate boost reading.
I bet if you had hit higher boost numbers in 3rd gear that you wouldn't have hit boost/fuel cut. It seems that the ECU takes a bit of time to recognize high boost (it must be sustained) and that's why I can run 20-21psi at the track (when I was in my "desperate hours") in 3rd gear with no cut. The fact that you were in 4th gear and prolonging the elevated boost condition was most likely the biggest contributor to you hitting boost/fuel cut.
Give the PSIG switch a try, and try another 4th gear pull and post your logs!
Isn't this stuff fun?

P.S. Did you get your bung welded yet? I'm chomping at the bit to go tuning with ya and see how your values/logs compare to mine! I bet we have a bunch of leaning out to do!
