Powder coated my FD3S rims...

Heya guys, check it out...

I just picked up the spare set I bought previously to replace my stockers. My right rear has a few tiny cracks in it, and I was getting nervous. They were done in Gunmetal (Anthracite) with a nice clear coat. The rims were bead-blasted, and the outside edges were smoothed down due to some really bad road damage. They looked like crap before...but after the coating...man..they look absolutely fantastic. Brand new, and the entire wheel looks beautiful. No blemishes, no scratches...I love 'em. Almost better than shelling out 2000 bucks for some bling-bling wheels.

What I really like, is the clear coat brings out the design of the rim, more...you can plainly see the arch of the spoke, and the contrast between the "edge" of it and the surrounding metal. It really changes the entire look of the rim.

Wha'tcha think? Hi-Tech Coatings in Kapolei, Oahu, HI did them for me...I think they look incredible. Now...I just need some quality tires. The ones currently on my car are all-weather tires...they absolutely suck on dry land. :(

me likey. how much does something like that cost, and can you powder in any other color, sorry if dumb question, i'm not a rim expert

ArchangelX 08-09-2004 02:29 PM

Welps...it was about 75 bucks per rim, but they had it done in two days, plus I didn't have to deal with any nonsense. Plus, unlike Sunset coating, the clear coat was included in the price...it would have been a little over 100 a rim if I went to Sunset.

And yes, they've got quite a few colors to choose from...and you can always special order the color as well.

You could do it yourself, or get someone else to do it for a helluva lot cheaper, but unless they've got a good oven, don't expect it to turn out as well, methinks.

If you need the number it's 682-2000 and speak to Tyler.

Thanks guys...I like 'em. :D

They do

good work. They ceramic coated my header and downpipe. I'm thinking about either chroming my SSRs, anodizing, or powder coating.

Do you have any concerns over the structural integrity of the wheels after the powder coating process?

ArchangelX 08-10-2004 12:10 AM

Not really...a ton of FD guys have done this already...because the stock rims are so light, they're really valuable as track day rims...and one member in particular (BATMAN) has run the crap outta them on his...

I really don't think there's going to be a problem...

Cool.....I have a set of wheels that need painting and I've been kicking the idea of powder coating them around for a while now.

look good mike! not as nice as a set of spinner hub caps from Checkers, but mighty fine!:)

can't wait to see em; on the car

ArchangelX 08-10-2004 11:30 AM

Thanks Justin, guys...my FD currently has engine demons...gotta figure out what's going on first. Dang engine only has 5000+ miles on it...so I'm a little worried that I might have gotten a bad motor or something. We'll see...

oldmansan 08-11-2004 12:52 AM

Well,

the chrome is as light or lighter than the paint, and I believe it will offer a stronger outer surface to battle my serious brake dust. sakebomb, just give me a call. I'm off until Monday, and after next week, off another week. 422-2595, 255-8591.

Hey Dan, I said a long time ago that powder coating them will not hurt the wheels regardless of what Luke said the heat they endure in the oven is nothing compared to the heat they see if you were lets say use them at a track day at a track like PIR...A good friend of mine does powder coating back in WA he did my motorcycle wheels and they were forged aluminium and they were and are still fine. Hey they powder coat car frames (yes they are steel not the same material as BBS wheels)..Just do it if they crack from everyday use I'll give you my BBS wheels..Can't guarentee track days seen pictures of cracked SSR's..
