need help!! replaced clutch!
 

hey guys. me and my uncle just installed a exedy stage 1 clutch and flywheel. i've ran into a problem though. 1st gear and reverse are jerking as i let off the clutch. i repeat jerking (not slipping); it sounds terrible. aside from those two gears, it sounds and runs beautifully. please someone enlighten me!! i hope its not my trans..

Maybe not using enough gas? I just had the same setup installed yesterday.

If its a lightened flywheel,you may have to adjust your driving style.I'm no engineer, but inertia is the word that best describes the reason you may be having trouble. You'll probably have to slip your clutch a little more,and give it a little more revs.If thats not it, then you might have transmission issues.

this is the same conclusion my uncle gave me, right on point. i found it hard to believe but at the same time it made sense. the car no longer feels like an average subie thats for sure.

to better describe the jerking its like a 240sx w/ LSD when it pulls out of 1st gear, similar jerking feeling.

can you relate to my problem, im curious.

IT sounds like you need to re-learn to drive with the new clutch. I had chatter issues when it was breaking in as well. Don't feel bad, we all stalled out many times before getting used to the new setup.

it may also get better as you add miles to it. just change your driving style like everyone else said. sounds like its real grabby or sticky right now. break it in properly and it should get better

right on guys, i guess i was so worried from my reaction it might just be as simple as re-learning. =| i hope but I'd still like to get a in-person evaluation one day.

Pretty much the concensus on this,..once broken in (my SPEC stage 2+ and LWFW took 2k miles to break in), your aftermarket clutch will be better than oem to withstand hp and tq power you're/will be adding....

Yup. I'm still breaking it in... install definitely takes the cool, easy daily driver factor out of the equation at first.

I went to an Exedy twin-plate myself a while back and had some major embarrasments stalling my car. Felt like a noob backing into a stall, would jerk and stall.

Ed, Master Subaru Mechanic, installed my Exedy and lightweight flywheel years ago and it was smooth from the start. You do need to give it a bit more gas, but I didn't have the stutters you mention. Have you tried getting on the gas fairly hard and slipping the clutch? Doing this periodically helps to eliminate the "shudders". It's similar to bedding in brakes in that you need material on the plates (and pad material on the rotors).
