misfire issues
 

whats up guys im pretty new to the subaru world just got my 2004 sti a few months ago im having a bit of a problem and seeing if maybe someone could help im having a misfire code in cyl 1 and 3 i"ve tried re gapping my plugs swapping my injectors around, removing my avcs oil screen and putting my map back to stock map i running out of ideas any help would be greatly appreciated

Give us a little more background information.
mileage?
does it run and drive fine but simply keeps throwing codes?
does it constantly run crappy?
when did the problem first appear?
What plugs are you running? Is the threaded part longer than most plugs?

when you removed the screens, was there any peices of the screens missing? did you clean the AVCS solenoid?

mileage is 69000
it has a really rough idle shakes a bit but drives fine besides the idle bouncing around
yesterday I had a p0011 code but that cleared when i pulled the avcs filter and now its just the misfire code. it started Saturday at a stop light it started shaking and the idle would build up pretty high and threw the codes.
the plugs are ngk laser iridium not sure how old they are and there threading did seem kinnda long. I think my next step will be to check the solenoid I think a piece was missing from the filter but it might have just ripped when i used a pick to pull it out. would the banjo bolt filter for the oil feed to the turbo be the cause I think that's what Ill pull next too.

you sure u have the coils in the right spots and didnt accidently mix em up?

check the boots to see if they arent ripped and the spark going some were else, 2. change the coils to the driver side, switch them, other than that have your ecu set back to stock and try it out

that exactly how its acting. Do i just swap the coil packs with each other? i didnt notice when i was putting them back in if i put them in the same cyl. i pulled them from will double check tomorrow thanks

The coil packs are all the same. They will be either 22433AA480 or 22433AA540, but will be one or the other... should not be more than one part number on your engine.

There are 2 different colors of plugs for the coil packs. The white in front and the black in the rear

I doubt switched connectors would be your problem. It would run like complete crap.

Sti plugs are supposed to have longer threading than normal. So that is ok.


FIRST, let reasoning lead the way. A part of the AVCS filter is possibly missing. A little chunk of the filter could cause this problem.
Remove the passenger side AVCS solenoid and housing. Clean it. Re-install.
The missing filter chunk is likely the problem. If this fixes your problem, change your oil and filter, just in case there is residual crap.

THEN, if the problem still exists, use a little something I call deductive parts swaping.
Start trading parts with other cylinders and see if the problem chases the part trade.
Document the process, to be sure and not second guess.

If these don't lead to a resolution, report your findings and I will assist further.

so I found out last night i was working on the wrong side i thought 1 and 3 were on the drivers side...fail! so today i removed the filter from the passenger side and the thing was ripped in half i removed it and replaced all my spark plugs but still having the misfire code and p0011 popped back up. my next step tomorrow will be to remove the solenoid and check that, i ran out of time today to do that. how difficult is it?

I did not see this mentioned, but this should be a no brainer. I would do a compression test (which will show an obvious mechanical issue) or a cylinder/head leak down test with a cylinder leakdown gauge and air compressor(will allow you to calculate percentage of leak for a possible weak cylinder)

good call, this is probably it, i have a feeling that the avcs is stuck causing the change in timing which is causing rough idle..

^ either that, or a faulty cam pos sensor.

to diag. the sensor, just swap sides. and see if you get P0021

yea i have problems with my cam sensor by the turbo... cant afford a new one
