If I were to buy a 240sx for autox, trackdays, drag...

Which one should I look for?

The intent is that whatever beater I buy, it will become more and more built. Maybe to the point where I can't drive it on the road.

I was also looking at the Legend. Is that tooooo far out for making into a race car?

sneezerboi 11-03-2004 01:32 PM

Legend? I owned a Vigor before.....it's a nice cruiser, but not too great for making fast. She's a heavy one. They are great for pimping hoes though, heh heh. ;)

.:: 808 STi ::. 11-03-2004 01:46 PM

check the "buy&sell" or "previews"....good place to find many cars...LoL

gpatmac 11-03-2004 01:57 PM

You mean on i-club?

Will a VG30DETT fit into a 240?;)

.:: 808 STi ::. 11-03-2004 02:07 PM

get a 240 "snach-crack".... :D they seem to be popular :p

myroncuz 11-03-2004 02:30 PM

pat, i was thinking about buying a 240 as a 2nd car.. forumshawaii got one for 3k..

hey pat, i got a 240 as my 2nd or is it 3rd car. anyways, the s14 is nice but heavy and not as common as the s13, so getting a new fender is not easy or cheap.

tips:

get a coupe so you don't have to deal with trunk rat holes. with the hatches, if it has a spoiler, then it has a hole(s).

make sure it does NOT have hicas (i leave the internet searching why up to you since i know you like that kind of stuff)

get fixed back(1 piece) aftermarket seats, the stock seats tend to break and fall back when you don't want it to, like during SCCA, yes, while i was racing. i highly recommend 1 peice as the stability is better and you won't have to worry about the seat giving. my seat gave a little when i hit the back of my 240 in to the tires and i hit my helmet on my roll bar, along with my passenger.

get custom seat mounts made when you buy a race seat because many of the brands like bride and such make tall mounts and you will not fit with your height.

Thanks B,

I didn't realize that there were responses. I can access the internet just fine, but the 'Websense' here won't allow me to see my emails. It's BS.

Anyhow, thanks a lot. Great info. I found a pristine S13 auto here in South Carolina for $1200 that I'll hopefully check out personally this weekend.

Anyhow, what info do you have as far as swaps? Pros and Cons for SR20 vs RB20 vs RB25?

Mike?;)

.:: 808 STi ::. 11-05-2004 04:07 PM

RB25!!!!!!!! do it!!!!!!

SR20's are cool too...ahahahaha...supposed to be the easiest one to slip in

IS2Scooby 11-05-2004 04:39 PM

Pat, why don't you build an SN95 'Stang with a turbo'd stroker motor? THAT would be AWESOME!

gpatmac 11-05-2004 05:49 PM

Cost, I guess. That and the originality of it.;) Believe it or not, I'd definitely be one in a million...literally. No one around here has anything more than fart cans.

I really like how much the Japanese seem to have eclipsed the US market in the design of their entire drivetrain.

I think that (without that much ammo) I would argue with most anyone about the, frick! I can't think of the word...not just durability but all-around capability of the Nissan turbo'd engines.

For a mustang or an LS1, I'd either have to fabricate the manifold myself or rely on some aftermarket supplier that's jacked up the prices on the 'kits', much like the na import cars have to put up with. I mean, I wouldn't be able to find a Mustang with a SC for the amount of money I have.

They have RB20's on Ebay for less than a k.

gpatmac 11-05-2004 05:52 PM

Any thoughts on the Legend?;)

scsi 11-06-2004 04:58 AM

i was thinking about doing this too actually. 240s come and go all the time anywhere from $1-4k more or less. i recommend keeping it stock for a little bit tho just to make sure u dont mod it then it explodes or something.

racerrob 11-06-2004 09:40 AM

240

i have a 240 ill be selling in about 2.5 months if you wanna wait for a super cheap one

gpatmac 11-06-2004 05:36 PM

Hey dude, I really appreciate it, but I'm no longer on the island. I just continue to troll here.;)

gpatmac 11-06-2004 06:29 PM

I just got back from a 110mi. trip to take a look at this one.

Found HERE

It's very nice and in really good condition, but in spite of myself, I'm having second thoughts. I'll do the pros and cons in each sentence:

It's an auto(c), but I'd like to do a swap anyhow (p). The swap is actually a p and a c because it's not as though I have the engine and tranny just lying around...nor the dough.:) Mach5 told me that Greddy makes a great kit for the KA24, and he said that NoLimit would agree (18hr? Thoughts?)

Also, my objective is that hopefully I'd be able to turn it into a race car, and as far as I can tell, NASA and Improved Touring Class require you to be NA.

gpatmac 11-06-2004 06:34 PM

I've given an '89 Mustang quite a bit of thought.:)

keirnna 11-06-2004 11:47 PM

Pat, go with a 2nd gen RX-7! If I were to buy any rear wheel drive car the RX-7 is on the top of my list. If you want speed they have them, and they are very light! Rotory engines rock! I almost picked up one of the turbo models on ebay for 5k, but then I got my RS. It was a hard decision for me, but oh well. You can get the n/a version for around 1k.

b_drift 11-07-2004 02:01 AM

that 240 in your pic at least has a DE motor in it. it seems to be a SE model, so you better check for hicas and especially open the trunk and look where the spoiler mounts, because it should have rust where the stupid spoiler meets the trunk.

a guy here went through many setups for his ka24de turbo and finally got a sr20det instead. so maybe that can answer the idea of turboing the ka or getting a sr20det. as for the rb20 and rb25, i liked mikes rb25, but not the price. the rb20 is selling for cheap for a reason. most likely harder to get parts.

gpatmac 11-07-2004 07:38 AM

I had to do a search. HICAS=BAD.

gpatmac 11-07-2004 07:46 AM

Nate,

The only thing holding me up in looking at a rotary is that I have gained a lot of knowledge in the last couple of years...I don't know a thing about rotaries.

You know I'm going to have to crack open the engine.;)

gpatmac 11-07-2004 07:52 AM

Also, I'm finding that I am unable to make a bid on ebay for a car. It's too difficult for me to bid a couple of K on something I'm unable to see...and the one I saw, while pretty much perfect, made me have 2nd thoughts.

Looks like I'm left with local classifieds.

Mach5WRX 11-07-2004 02:49 PM

Pat, as soon as I can sell the STi I'm going to pick up an S14 and get this greddy kit for it.

Model:240SX
Year:1996-98
Kit: TDO6SH-20G cast manif. w/ e-manage, fuelrail & 370cc inj.
Part# 11520633
Price: $3,590.00

I like the KA for the .4 more displacement and extra torque yO! But I'm not a 240 expert. ( b is the i-club 240 go to guy.) The kit's price is little high.....but you won't have to do a swap.......and get a damn 5speed!:p Start with the best "base" you can it will make your project go smoother.

I'd go with a S14.....I had a S13 and it sucked to get in and out of it. We are way too tall for S13's.

gpatmac 11-07-2004 04:22 PM

keirnna 11-07-2004 05:06 PM

No rotary all the way! You're smart pat, so you can be a rotary expert also. You could do drift sessions, and track meets with the rx-7! It would be a beast!

gpatmac 11-07-2004 05:34 PM

Pat don't drift.;)

keirnna 11-07-2004 06:11 PM

You might change you mind, but either way go with the RX-7!

gpatmac 11-07-2004 08:47 PM

Looks good. Handles well. Drives fast. But the engine intimidates me.

I dont' want to have to rely on anyone again to do work on my car, which is what I'd have to do if I had a rotary.

keirnna 11-07-2004 11:35 PM

Man Pat you have to go for the non-conventional engines: rotary and boxer! Screw some run for the mill straight inline or v set-up! You can buy the aftermarket manuals for the RX-7, and you'll be good to go!

gpatmac 11-08-2004 06:18 AM

Straight 6.;) Can you imagine being able to pop the valve covers off in minutes and be able to swap out the cam, change your compression, check the pistons... without even so much as a bruised knuckle.:)

gpatmac 11-08-2004 04:27 PM

I think I've had an epiphany.

I'm off island right now....... I'll be home and back on XBOX live around Dec 15th.

gpatmac 11-08-2004 07:40 PM

Man, y'all with the Xbox just make me jealous. Isn't McRae '05 available on PS2? I'm playing Auto Modelista right now. It's not too bad a game. Not much for reality, but it keeps me occupied.

Dan, thanks. But wouldn't it be just too cool? :D Remember that vid I posted a long time ago with that guy in a BMW in like Denmark, and his straight cut gears wind so high, it hurt your ears? I wish I had some cash.

I updated Kathy tonight on how my search is coming and what my future plans were for the beater. She said, 'we'll talk about it another time.' I can't win. I'm getting this beater so I'm not spending so much on the WRX, but I guess I must've misunderstood her intent from the beginning, huh?

gpatmac 11-08-2004 08:48 PM

Did you notice that the BMW was an AWD 6cyl?:D
