Getting pulled over for exhaust

Hi everyone, hope you day is going great.

I had a question regarding getting pulled over by a cop or a ticket because of their exhaust.

What characteristic of the exhaust make cops pull you over?

Did anyone here ever get pulled over and what was the consequence?

Also is law enforcement in hawaii strict about having a loud exhaust?

Thanks everyone for taking the time to read my thread.

I got a ticket and he wrote me down for loud muffler. But I got a spt exhaust so it's a factory option. I'm gonna fight it. In my opinion I would fight it because exhaust is not even a recon item.

So the main reason he pulled you over was for the loud muffler? Not like a speeding ticket?

What do you think your chances are in court?

I got pulled over by the sheriffs for my exhaust. He followed me for about mile before he finaly pulled me over. Got a ticket so I wrote a letter telling them that my exhaust was legal in so many states. I had a Cobb turboback which one of the quietest exhaust out there. They half the ticket price only had to pay $35. If they think its loud they will pull you over. They don't have a db meter to test how loud your exhaust. They will only go by ear.

As for SPT you can fight it since you can say and prove its a factory part.

Idk how it is on oahu, but on maui, as long ass u dont drive like a a$$ u r good. I also havr a spt and never got in trouble since living on oahu. Bout to get my q300 soon and am not worried. Cops usually pick n choose for stuff like that. Just dont drive like a a $$.

its called disturbance. just like getting a ticket for loud music/sounds.
i got a ticket for my exhaust before in my G. its just a recon ticket thats all, you just pay a fine.

and it is part of recon. anything RECONstructive to your car. hence the word recon.

I'm not in Hawaii but I've been living in California (which is very strict when it comes to exhaust modification) for 5 years and I haven't been pulled over once for my Cobb turboback. It looks closer to a stock muffler and isn't overly loud. Plus I have a wagon which I think helps me stay low profile. I'm sure if I went screaming past a cop WOT I would get pulled over in a second.

Recheck your sources because exhaust is not a recon item...

If they do ticket you for the noise, does that go on your record?

SUMATIC808 Jan 27, 2013 08:27 PM

okay youre right. just checked
but i gots a ques. it says "intake/exhaust will likely pass as long as the exhaust isn't too loud" does that mean if its loud you need a recon?
if thats not a case then i paid a ticket that couldve been fought.

"Do I have to get recon for my headers/exhaust/intake?
No. These are not recon items. And even if you did, any intake/exhaust will likely pass as long as the exhaust isn't too loud (they don't have any DB meters down there, they just listen to it). If your car is fitted with a catalytic converter, you will still need a cat, but you can use an aftermarket high flow type and still not need recon"

i havent checked my record so idk if its still on my record but what kinda ticket did he actually give you? a recon ticket or for something else?

I was just asking for future reference.

Goes on your abstract, but not as a speeding violation.

Shouldn't be frowned upon if if employers ask for a "clean" abstract. They are looking for red flags like speeding and DUI.

I got pulled over in CA and the cop asked is this catless I said yes and he said alright great and walked away. I was not speeding or driving like an A$$ so he wasn't mad. Some cops will give you a harder time than others
I would go to court because cops won't show up most of the time because they are busy.
Off the record my exhaust is catless :)
They will follow you for a while if you have a wing on the back, this happens to me haha,
Just drive normal

its really a hit or miss OP.

like many said, it isn't a recon item. i went into recon with dual invidias (n1 style) on my s2k and had no problem with recon.

hit or miss, because a cop can choose to be a dingding and pull you over if you driving like an idiot. in my civic prior, i had a greddy se exhaust (fairly quiet), and i punched it once in walmarts parking lot, and as i exited i had 4 cops trap me in the corner lol. (well it was late at night, but i just wanted to hear my exhaust in an enclosed structure :P), they ended up tagging me for tail lights that were non dot lol. so moral is that if they feel they want to pull you over, it might be to find other things to site you for since your car is then considered "modified"
