DIY: Clutch Start Switch Bypass
 

This is a way to start your car without having to depress the clutch pedal, just like an automatic!! They way the clutch switch works is it's a normally open switch until you close the circuit to the starter relay by depressing the clutch pedal. It's good for setting your car up for remote start, and if you have a bad clutch switch and can't start your car, this is a better alternative to replacing one. Because you don't have to depress it anymore to start your car!!

Tools:
Crimping tool
16 gauge wire (2 inches)
2 male spade terminals

Locate the switch above the clutch pedal and disconnect the connector with the two wires (black & green/yellow on my 93 model).

Make a jumper wire made of the 2" wire and male spade terminals.

Connect your jumper wire on both female spade terminals and tuck your connector away. By installing a jumper wire, you are permanently closing the circuit to the starter relay and you can now start up your car without stepping on the clutch!! [B]Just make sure its in neutral though, lol!![/B]

Very nice. Simple and easy. My kind of mod. If I didn't have to park on a hill everyday I would do this, along with a remote start.

^^it's considering you leave the car in gear when you shut it off. personally I learned when I first started driving to keep it out of gear. on top of that I rely solely on my E brake to hold the car in place. for some odd reason I have a fear of keeping the car in gear on an incline or decline and it messing up the tranny.

It should be common practice to put the shifter in neutral when starting your car if that's the only thing that's unsafe. That's why manufacturers put that switch in the first place, but I'm over it and just want to fire up and go without using my left foot. :)

I wouldn't consider it to be "unsafe" but rather just dumb if you do this and leave the car in gear, generally the engine will just stall out, that is unless you have some super low geared rock crawler that will still go and not stall, that is something I would consider unsafe. I heard a story about a guy who left his rock crawler wangler in gear and the rig crawled through the garage and into the house.

But parking on a hill, I generally leave it in gear (opposite of the incline), apply the parking brake, and curb my wheels (if there is a curb). My car stays where I left it.

Well it is a safety measure for noob peoples who are not used to drive stick.
It is here to prevent any start while in gear.

But it is dumb because LOT of peoples press the clutch pedal to start and right away let it go without checking if the car is in any gear...
They will still jump forward and stall... stupid if you ask me.

Car should have a gear check rather than a clutch check before starting...

Always play with the stick left and right anyway before any start up.
And most of the time the e-brake in up, so shouldn't be a problem.

another reason they put the safety in the clutch is it takes less amperage for the starter to start the vehicle...

my only thing is...make sure you dont have a remote start alarm...for those pple who leave the car in gear...forgetting then doing the remote start thingy

How does it take less amperage when its basically the same as depressing the clutch. Once the car starts, you let the key off to ON, the relay shuts the starter off, and the bendix drive retracts, undoing itself from the flywheel. Unless the clutch switch has resistors to lower amperage??

He probably means the starter wont have to spin the clutch plate and the transmission input shaft. With less load the starter itself would draw less amps.
