Bounce Test?

How exactly do they perform the bounce test?

Do they actually push down on your bumper or do they open your hood and push down on the unibody frame?

Do they check for bounce in both front and rear or just front?

Thanks!

Taken from a local blog:
Your car will also be subjected to a "bounce test" to check for adequate suspension travel. They typically test this at a front corner or at the middle of the bumper by pushing down on it. You need to have visible (not necessarily 2 inches) of suspension travel.
My cousin-in-law, who lives in Kailua, says that location depends on the tech performing the test. The "standard" is to check at the front bumper by pushing down on it. If they want to be thorough, they'll check front and rear.

Is this for recon? It depends on which inspector you get, it's very subjective. When I went, he pushed down on the front fender. When my friend went, they let him stand on the door sill and jump on it.

Man... just the thought of someone pushing down hard on a body panel... makes me sick.

Air out the tires a tad, that helps.

Ask the tech to please not push down on your fender, and to let you stand on the door sill, that also helps, and is a reasonable request.

Thanks for that bit of advice. I wasn't sure if we even had a say in that or not. I guess the worst he can say is "No," right? :thumb:

Exactly.

Some advice, make sure nothing on your car says "for off road use only". No stickers on the windows, make sure your tint is legal, intake is secured, battery secured, and make sure you have the foam under the bumper cover. Some napples or manapua couldn't hurt either.

How do they even see if this is back there?

Haha... they won't be like "Hey... you got something to hide so you're bringing me this?"

Any one ever pass the bounce test with Ohlins R&T coilovers or am I going to have to get some weak @ss springs?

They get a flashlight and look in through the front grill, then put their hand up into the bumper and find it. Blew me away when the guy did that, I was thinking... wtf is he doing? then shortly afterward... F***............................

I take it you had a FMIC? How'd you get around that? Or you didn't?

Krang Oct 16, 2016 01:55 AM

I did have one at the time, and I didn't get around it, had to take it out. I was going to take it out eventually but having to run the bumper beam forced me to move up my schedule.

I should go just for the hell of it...stock sti suspension ...rofl

Man, does every inspector look for the foam?
This is the first time I've heard of this as well.
I should just start to look for a safety inspector that'll pass me. Lol.

I told them not to push down my fenders. I told them I can sit on the seat of each side if need be (idk why I thought that'd validate as a test). And the inspector said "that's fine, it won't be necessary" and he skipped the test. My advice, tell them "Don't push on my fenders/car, please". Just be nice to the dude/lady.

He DID however feel for foam, at the time I taped cooler foam looool and they didn't say anything.

Things they really get ya for IME,
- Amber corners and markers.
- Decals.
- Foam.
