Anyone want to try? Rear mirror gauge

Rear View Mirror AEM Gauge Integration - The Unofficial BMW M5 Messageboard (m5board.com)

Anyone have any thoughts on how this is done and want to try?
It can't be that hard.

i would guess you're gonna need to find out the depth of the guts from both gauges first. depending on the depth you may need to use the accessory compass mirror. then you will ned to probably replace the glass so it can be seen through. looks like the guy cut squares out of his glass and might have gotten them recoated. i would suggest you try TV Mirror Samples and just get a sample piece and cut it to size. you could use the old mirror glass as a template and just cut a piece that will fit. can't imagine this would be super difficult but at the same time not super easy. personally i wouldn't want lights blinking in my rear view, i think it would be annoying and could cause unwanted attention. if you do go for it keep us posted, good to see more diy projects

added to my project list.

love the idea; i remember taking apart my auto dimming mirror and realizing that it was like a 1-way mirror (Acura TL-s), it shouldn't be too hard to do this, especially if you pickup a rear mirror cover and/or just glass or carbon your own up (heck, if it's diy, why not go all the way right?)

now to find cheap gauges...

agreed with sleeper up there thought ^^ blinking lights in the mirror would blunt my cop scanning abilities and maybe even dim my paranoia... not to mention the unwanted attention lol.

you could always get a rearview mirror with a screen in it and hook it up to an obd gauge display link too i suppose

I don't daily my car so I'm really concerned with the distraction. A gauge pod is equally flashy and distracting in my opinion. Think about those rear view mirrors that display ambient temps.

I don't mind gutting a rear view mirror; it's hacking the aem gauge that scares me
I'll check out the mirror samples. Thanks

Here we go plx gauge in rear view mirror
I think if the dimmer worked it wouldn't be as distracting

that plx gauge is where it's at. all in one desgin is clean, i'll have to look that one up (and start looking for a auto dimmer mirror... would be tough to lose my superwide mirror though, i really like that thing)

Cool idea, but it's not for me personally. Would be cool to see it done and functioning in person though.

nice....but I prefer my gauges at eye level. specifically my O2 wideband.

If I had working OBD2, I'd go with the PLX for sure. I have a need to run the AEM serial gauge, but the stupid thing has ***** on it.
It makes sense why they are using digital gauges, as I'm sure the depth is very shallow, as it's likely only a board and the gauge face, unlike a mechnical unit that has a diaphragm.

of course, digital is the only way to go, i like the plx's all in one desgin, but i guess it depends on what a person would want to read - plus the PLX is piece-meal, so you can daisy chain in as many sensors as you want i guess if you dont go obd.

an independent boost and afr digital gauge would be pretty killer though, that's 2 of the 5 things i'd like to keep an eye on (but really just the two i care about as well)... the dm200 is on sale between 2-250, not bad for an all in one gauge, but it does exactly what a cobb does... so almost worth investing in a cobb and embedding it's lcd into the mirror... (though slightly smaller lcd overall)

definitely a good idea! I'm more of a raw gauge type of person honestly, but it would be a cool project to try for sure. gl.
