Anyone have HawaiianTel Com or Clearwire as their ISP?

Just wanted to hear your testimonials on their services.

tesh 07-12-2011 12:27 AM

ive got hawaiian tel dsl (w/o a phone line) - i bought the 10mbps line when it was on a sale for a lifetime $35 for any line (now it's 55?) it's not consistent, but there are days where you can get a solid 10d/2up, avg 5d/1.5up

their included router is crap, but i havent upgraded it (has wifi G)

and i havent tried their free wifi hotspot deal, but i think it's included, i just dont know where lol.

overall, it was more dependable than tethering my 4g EVO from sprint, much faster than 3g tether, and nice to have an always on setup at home for my home cloud server...

edit, just ran a speedtest, on wifi via macbook

im actually curious to know if the newer 4g hotspots are any better - i'd leave one permanently on at my place on most days but would be great for random travel around the isle if i needed to tether my ipad.. (usually just tether on 3g)

iNfEk 07-12-2011 01:23 AM

the HT hotspots are available at any coffee bean and tea leaf shops. your master email address and password (hawaiiantel.net) is required.

gee thanks....well we BOTH work at HawaiianTel an I can say that between the two you should go with the one that gives you the better service at the location you are in. I believe HT and Clearwire will let you try the service for up to a month so get both and see which one works better. DSL speed varies depending on your location so get both and see which one you like. If you have problems with HT internet just let me know and if I can fix it I'll send Jon out there to get it going ;)

iNfEk 07-12-2011 01:46 AM

LOL! yup exactly

iNfEk 07-12-2011 01:48 AM

depending on what central office you get your phone service from walter will determine which one you would go with. I honestly don't like clear service. This is a completely NON BIAS answer. I use a clear hotspot almost on a daily basis for work when I'm out an about. 4g isn't that great. I'd try it and see how it goes.

corytomo 07-12-2011 12:24 PM

dsl speed in kaimuki sucks, i get 2 mb/sec at max. i think the wiring in the house is crappy too, but man, i need more speed

enzo350 07-12-2011 01:54 PM

I have HT DSL - the naked DSL they call it with no dial tone. I had it for about 3 years. Before that, I had Roadrunner. Honestly, I like HT's DSL better. Better speeds (period). I hated Roadrunner's speeds. Totally sucked. I joined HT when they first started the naked DSL service, when they had a promo to offer the highest possible speed for $39.99 per month. I live near a CO so I have the 11M/7M service. Of course, real world is not quite that much. I ran a test a while back and I remember I got 6M/3M consistently. I'm pretty happy with that.

Haole-Pino 07-13-2011 12:55 AM

Hey Walter, LMK if you wanna try Clearwire service. We average between 3-6Mbps with speed burst up to 10Mbps...I thought you knew by now, I'm Clearwire's longest running employee with the Hawaii Market. I manage the Clear Keeaumoku Retail Store. If your intrested, we have this new 4G Personal Hot-Spot device called the Rover. I can also give you a great deal... Besides the 30 day return policy, it comes with Unlimited download data, Unrestricted Download speeds, connect up to 8 devices, ect....Also, It's regular price is normally about $100 for the device, but I can sell it to ya for $25, as long as I have my backup stock on hand. Service is about $45 a month...LMK if your intrested, you got my number bro. Either way, I'll see you on the cruise!! Shoots.

I'm with HT and have their 11/1 plan. They've been really good to me so far. Only prob I had was with my wireless router which needed to be replaced anyway because it was a relic. Here's my results.

Used all three and decided to stick with RR Turbo.

When I bought the new place, I got Hawaiian Tel's 11Mbit line, with the sales guy telling me that my place qualifies. It worked for 4 days at close to advertised speeds, then one day, no signal return. Took a few days for a technician to get to my ticket and when he got to it, he dropped it to 5Mbit and it didn't work. Dropped it to 1.5Mbit and it finally worked. The technician claimed that where I live was too far(10k ft max?) from the node and even when their computers say it is within the range, it wasn't. He asked me if leaving it at 1.5Mbit was okay. Hell no, I'm not paying 11Mbit price for 1.5Mbit.

Regarding Clear, they recently dropped all retail and went into business sales. My cousin who owned 2 Clear kiosks jumped ship because sales were horrible and now is selling Oceanic. For Clear, it's all about where your antennas are.

anyone using the new RR service? the 5mb upload one...

sigterm 08-09-2011 12:47 PM

15/1 ? thats pretty sweet up/down rate. Was thinking of upgrading lately but wanted to ask just how good the rates were in realtime.

usmcrockstar 08-09-2011 03:30 PM

I had clear 4G for a long time and dealt with the crappy speed but I have to say once my contract is over I will no longer be stealing my roommates RR and I will be getting a line of my own. I dont know what my speeds were but it took about 3-5 times as long to buffer the same streaming video with the clear than it did with the RR. I may not be in a good place to get the Clear signals but even with 4 bars on my receiver it was slower than molasses. I wouldnt recommend it but do your own research based on your area. That will make a huge difference with the Clear since it is a wireless technology.

Link speed on Clear is highly dependent on your signal quality. the modem shown here was only getting 1 to 2 bars and occasionally disconnected.

Disassembled the case off the modem.
Made a big hole with a hole saw, attached a test probe adapter to the smd test connector on MB. Using another adapter attached the probe connector to a low-loss external antenna cable.

Run the cable outside to a WiMax 19dbi directional antenna and point towards the nearest Clear tower.

Went from 1-2 bars to full bars and sucky connection to full bars and it was able to sustain advertised connections speeds.

Try a local Honolulu server the Palo Alto one gives mixed readings, depends on time of day traffic and stuff.

CLEAR hasnt dropped there Retail Channel. I'm a Senior Retail Sales Representative for CLEAR Hawaii, It's been my Full Time job for the past 4 years, I work @ our flagship Keeaumoku Retail Store. We closed our Maui Retail Channel earlyer this year due to its poor performance in that market (Maui only loaded about 10 new accounts a week, Oahu does that in one afternoon). Oahu CLEAR Retail is still strong, we have 5 Retail locations on Oahu to serve our customers.

Ala Moana Center (Next to Apple) 808-354-0015
Windward Mall (Near Center Stage) 808-354-0017
Pearlridge Uptown (Near the Food Court) 808-354-0014
Keeaumoku Store (Next to Likelike Drive Inn) 808-354-0297
Kahala Mall (Near Kahala Kids) 808-626-5693.

and I'm happy to report, we rank in the top 10 CLEAR Retail Markets nationwide. CLEAR has a total of 45 Retail Markets nationwide, from Las Vegas to New York City!! So we still have a stong connection to our local customers. There have been reports about us switching to business sales only, but I can assure you, thats not the case.

I'm sorry to hear that your cousin left us as a third party representive, due to sales being slow and all for him. BTW, is your cousin name Tony or Adam? From HI Comm? If so, tell them Dave from CLEAR says HI. They had 2 kiosks (Alaz and Pearlz) selling CLEAR service, and recently coverted to selling RR. Anyways, I can tell you this much, sales for us here at CLEAR Retail have been quite busy. The commission checks I make, are the one's paying for my STi, The hourly checks cover the other bills lol.

But if you have any questions reguarding CLEAR, please feel free to PM me here on HIIC, or call me up at my store :)

Mahalo,
Dave

BTW, for those intrested in CLEAR service, and wants to know if there location has a good signal, please PM your address with zip code, and floor level (if you live in an apartment), and Ill respond back how stong of a signal you have, and if you can pass for Poor, Good, or Great CLEAR service signal...

It's easy enough to do, don't do this however unless you own your clear modem as it does involve modification to the case.

where I used to work, we tried all 3 providers except Clearwire was the wireless one at the time. Clearwire sucked and I rated it 1 out of 10 as we couldnt get a clean signal being in town and around and buildings where we needed it.

As for wired hookups, HT and Oceanic people tell me there really is no difference in speeds as you will get the faster speeds if your area and neighborhood usage allows. Meaning, you can pay for the "Turbo" or "Business" class, but if you are too far away or your neighborhood takes up a lot of bandwidth, you wont consistently have those speeds.

HT seems better cause it runs off a telephone line, Oceanic runs off their cable line, so if you got a backup battery supply you can still have internet.
