Anyone with cracked OEM Oil Pickup tubes?

I've been reading on LGT.com about this and saw threads on NASIOC and other Subie forums...

Problem with OEM oil pickup tubes are that vibration and bad design have them cracking at the flange and causing oil starvation to the engine = blown engine...

Anyone experienced this problem as they say it isnt a bad problem with 05 Legacy owners, but 06 + do have it...Im thinking about getting it just for the reliability issue....but at $250 + its hard to swallow but still worth getting...

if it is a problem that you think you might have, do you think that it would be cheaper to drop the oil pan, yank the pick up tube and add a few tack welds to the flange?

From all the oil pans that I have drop there is a support bracket welded to the oil pickup.

There are lots of threads on NASIOC covering this. Basically this has been happening since the 02 WRX came out and has gotten worse over the years (or maybe just better documented). http://www.killerbmotorsport.com has one for $192. It's what I have in my car. There is a technical article on this pickup on there too.

A buddy of mine had this happen on his 06 STI. He opted not to have the dealership tear down the engine to find the cause of the death of the motor because he had mods and figured it was related to that and therefore would be a pointless $2,000. Bought a $6,000 built motor and it turned out to be the oil pick up line which probably would have been under warranty

Good thread. I'm wondering if that is my culprit now, and if servco would cover if it was indeed the pickup.

You have a blown engine? DAMN!!

I think it would be best to take off all engine parts off the car before though...Think exhaust pieces would be ok,..but you never know and better safe than sorry... I think this is the only real worry about owning a Subaru for me,...problem free other wise other than the TSB or Wheel bearings and cooling fan relay which is minor....Oil pickup tube FTL!!!

Hey Chris, I even read it over on the sister site/Nasioc. Even a dude complained about his motor blowning twice in less than a year due to oil starvation. And his car was both serviced by a Subaru Dealership.

Hope you get your issue sorted out Kevin. We dont want you to get rid of the leggy

And this happens to cars driven on the street? then what about us guys who autocross....we're doomed! nah, I've always been looking to an oil pan w/some sort of windage tray. Moroso has one, and so does Cosworth ($$$), but I never thought that the actual pick-up tube would be the problem.

Happens in completely stock cars just as much as modified cars. The pickups are failing from a manufacturing defect, not from engine modifications.

You can find some good info IN HERE.
