Knock Sensor Details
2000 Forester L.
Code from "Check Engine Light" scanner indicates P0325 Knock Sensor Circuit Malfunction. Car runs well except for a little hesitation upon acceleration. A few questions:
1- Oddly, the Check Engine Light is off at the beginning of the day. The warning light comes on after a few initial blocks of driving. I thought that once you have a fault, it stayed on forever, until cleared by a scanner?
2- I had to apply a huge amount of pressure to loosen the knock sensor bolt, like I was going to break it. It finally came out fine. Is that normal?
3- I cleaned the contacts, hoping that would solve my fault code. Reinstalling the bolt, I applied anti-seize goop to the threads. As I don't know much about how the knock sensor exactly senses, is applying the goop OK?
4- After clearing the fault code with a scanner, the knock sensor fault code returned. Reading the post about knock sensor part numbers (dated 2 May 06), how do I find the appropriate part number for my 2000 Forester VIN JF1SF635XYH731460?

1. It probably takes a few minutes for the vehicle to warm up to operating temperature, which might explain why it clears.
2. The heating and cooling cycles of the bolt would probably make it a prime candidate for fusing/sticking into the block assembly.
3. I wouldn't have applied anti-seize to the threads. This might help "cushion" the vibrations (knock), which may give the knock sensor a false reading. It might not, but I'm figuring it would.
4. The appropriate part number for your Forester would be the 22060AA070. Prices may vary due to location of the dealership.
Whatever you do DO NOT GO TO SANTA MONICA SUBARU for parts or service, or anything else if you love your Forester.
