I heard a rumor bout my EJ-18....

my friend told me that its just a de-bored EJ-22. And if this is true does that meant that 2.2 parts, such as intake kits, headers, and valvetrain will bolt right on?

Kostamojen 05-22-2003 04:49 PM

No. The EJ18 is more closely related to the EJ20, the EJ22 is its own engine. Although I have learned that putting EJ20 stuff on the EJ18 wont work as easly as you would think... :(

However, any intake designed for a MAF based EJ series engine (EJ25, EJ22, or even EJ18) are compatible, and any dual-port header will work with the EJ18 (like the borlas, brullens, MRT, even the TWE's). Crank pulleys are compatible as well. Im running borlas with a custom 2" midpipe and WRX muffler, an underdrive pulley, and a modified stock intake (you cant really do much better with our intakes, just remove the silencer and make the hole on the airbox a little bigger and you are good to go)

heh thanks, yeah i drilled 3-2" holes in the airbox but it was WAY loud so i taped one up, and what do you mean by remove the silencer?

Kostamojen 05-22-2003 10:43 PM

There is a white plastic toilet bowl looking silencer that goes from the airbox by the fender into the passanger side fenderwell from the engine bay. Basically you want to remove that and get a couple extra HP. Its not that hard, only two small nuts holding it down and then you have to pull it out under the bumper by folding back the fender liner somewhat (requires taking off 2 clips, if they break just replace them with zip ties)

This should give you a better idea: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=167

Won intake: Never heard of it, but by the looks (open air, no bracing) I bet you've blown MAFs.
Venom 400: Is this nitrous? If not it is doing zilch. If so... why?
Accel wires: didn't know they made Impreza sets. They are good though.
Bosch Platinum +4: pure marketing. Switch to NGK coppers, the $1.29 ones. They give you the best spark.
Borla header: Sounds great, but doesn't make more than 5 horsepower on my EJ25. Zilch on yours.
3" midpipe: You just turned your car into a Honda. No torque, some high end. I hope it fits the turbo+downpipe, but even then it is probably bigger than you need.
Geddy muffler: To each his own.
Forgies: good start, but you need rods and head studs too.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you are still probably aren't making EJ22 power.

someone said that EJ18 have STI-RA con rods but as for the head bolts are they really needed?

They may be near (or even exactly) the same size, but definitely not the same. It would be very wasteful for the EJ18 rods to be capable of supporting the RA's power, and that's very un-Subaru like. And yes, new studs are very important when you start making more than factory power. Better safe than sorry.

Kay95 06-13-2003 09:25 AM

oh ok i thought you meant getting better than the grade 8 studs but yes i do understand get new ones

as for the con rods someone said this but he didnt show any pics of it
maybe subaru has a casting of them and then forges them on the sti but we get the unforged version this would sound more like subaru

I'd still get some ARP studs or the equivalent if you plan to make serious power. It's not that expensive, and better safe than sorry.
