crank shaft.. depends on if you have a manual or an automatic.
if you have a manual put it in gear (1st or reverse) pull the hand brake on then loosen the bolt. If you have an automatic take off the inspection cover for the timing belt on the drivers side. the cam shaft pully should have 'spokes' on it.. take some heavy wire and run it thru one of the spoaks and around a bolt on the block and wrap it a bunch of times, the loosen it up.. this method works great if you are planning to replace the timing belt... if not i would suggest finding another way to do this because you run the risk of the timing belt slipping a tooth or overstressing the belt, thus weakining it..
as far as the alturnator... take it down to a local auto parts store and find the youngest kid working there and ask him to pull it off for you..

I followed the Vishnu crankshaft pulley instructions when I installed mine in my 2004 WRX. Worked like a charm. Took maybe 20-30 minutes to do. I'm in San Jose, if you need any help with it.

PART ONE: VISHNU UNDERDRIVE PULLEY

Before removing the underdrive pulley, you will need to loosen and remove the two drive belts. First, whip out that 10 mm wrench and remove the plastic belt cover. Next, loosen the tensioners (using all 12 mm bolts and nuts). Start by looking at the pulley that is located towards the driver’s side of the car at the same height at the crankshaft pulley. Slightly loosen the bolt that goes into that pulley. Then loosen the other two bolts in that bracket/arm. Then, the long bolt that is parallel to that bracket/arm is loosened. As you loosen it, the pulley should move up and release tension on that belt.

Next, between the AC and the Alternator, somewhat right above the pulley you just loosened, is a bolt that forms the pivot point for the alternator. Loosen that rather large 14 mm bolt. Now the alternator can pivot. So, look for another long, vertical bolt to the right side of the car from the pulley. This one has a bolt (12 mm) holding it clamped in place. Loosen that bolt (should be about half way down the long bolt). Then loosen the long bolt. If the alternator does not drop down slowly, then loosen the pivot point a little more. Push down on the alternator if you need to.

Once the belts are loose enough, remove them completely. Put the car in 4th or 5th gear and have someone step on the brake pedal (if you’re alone, use the handbrake and pull it pretty darn tight but make sure not to roll the car off the jacks!). This will keep the engine from rotating during the next step. With the big 22 mm (7/8th inch) socket (and an even bigger breaker bar), loosen (turn counter-clockwise) the bolt that secures the stock pulley to the front of the engine. It is torqued on tightly, so it will require some moderately heavy yanking. Just be careful not to hurt yourself or your fenders when doing this.

Once cracked loose, the bolt can be unscrewed by finger. With the bolt removed, pull or wiggle the stock pulley off and remove it from the car. Then install your Vishnu pulley on the crankshaft and tighten the bolt to 96 ft-lbs. If you do not have a torque wrench, with a 1.5 foot torque arm, this is pretty tight, but not hernia-inducing tight. Slip the supplied, shorter-than-stock belts onto the pulleys. Use the 4-rib belt in back and the 5-rib belt in front. The front belt is tough to get on (the next available size up is too large) so take your time. Make sure the alternator is all the way down – it is pivoted as far as it will go. Then, wrap the belt around the two larger pulleys first and "work" the belt on the alternator pulley. If you get it started on the top side, then rotating the engine (with the breaker bar and NOT by running the engine!!, and of course, you'll have to take the transmission out of gear in order for the engine to rotate freely) may help pull the belt on. Once you have the belts on, tighten the long bolts first to tension the belts. Make them about as tight as they will go with reasonable effort. They will loosen slightly during the first few hundred miles. They should be taut, but they should have some play in them. After getting the long bolts, tighten all the rest of the bolts you loosened and reinstall the plastic cover.

the vishnu instructions look pretty good. when i did mine i held a giant (3ft) tourque wrench with the 22mm socket on the bolt. then i had my buddy start my engine and stop it almost immediately. it threw me a little and im about 200lbs so if ur any lighter than that be careful. i guess no matter what be careful. but yeah make sure u take all the belts off first. to tighten down the new pulley i put my old belt on just the crank pulley and put all my weight on the pulley. then my buddy tightenend down the bolt. as for the alternator and/or steering pump pulleys good luck. maybe try using a large clamp. good luck

Good luck. It's not difficult if you follow the Vishnu method. I would stay away from using the starter motor to loosen the bolt. That's a sure way to round the crank bolt and damage other stuff (including yourself). 96 ft-lbs to loosen and tighten that bolt isn't that hard to do. I weigh 160lbs and used a 2-ft torque wrench with minimal effort. I did the whole install by myself in my garage. It was cake.
