Switching to Amsoil

Hey i-club. This is my 1st post so try to take it easy on me ( but not that easy). I am new to this forum but not to subies by any means. I built an 87 hatch from a free piece of junk to a bad*ss wheeler and very reliable daily driver with a lot of help and posting on USMB. I had a 04 WRX for a while until someone hit me a totalled it out. And now i just picked up a 2008 WRX and lovin it.
Now with that said, its just about time for my 1st oil change. The engine has about 34k on it. As im sure many of you know, dealer does not recommend switching to synthetic oil at all. And since i purchased the car at Stevens Creek Subaru in San Jose before i found out about all the problems they cause, i dont want to take it there for service. I also love to work on my own vehicles. I have been looking into Amsoil. Did some research, quit a few people do not like Mobil 1 and have had bad experiences with it. I have not, just what i have found online. Top 2 oils being used seems to be Amsoil and Redline.
After getting ahold of my local Amsoil dealer, talking with him and doing my own research i think i will be going with their 10w30 designed for turbo or supercharged engines. I have not been able to find many people running this oil, maybe because its fairly new. Does anyone have any experience using this??????
I might be ordering a case of oil and the Amsoil dealer said he would throw in 2 free Absolute Efficiency oil filters, from what i can find (which isnt alot) seems to be equal or better quality that the Wix filters.
So anyone with either experience with the oil or filters, please chime in and give me your opinion. Thanks.

He is not the only one that has "heard" this, I ran it on my stock 2.0 and went through 2 qt every 3500 miles!! changed to amsoil and did not burn any. Mobile 1 is also no a true senthetic. they changed it in 1996 and it has not been full ever since.

Got a 11 wrx and have been using amsoil since the first oil change. Got about 9k miles now and have not noticed any oil consumption.

I think im picking up the case for around $110. And hes throwing in 2 filters and an amsoil crankcase cleaner for switching from conventional to synthetic for free. Everything ive heard and read this is the way i want to go. But my question is, has anyone used the Amsoil filters? Or should i stick to oem?

06stibeast 05-16-2011 09:07 AM

your car calls for a 5w30 and amsoil is pretty good i don't see why their oil filters wouldnt be I use mobil 1 oil filters and im thinking about switching to amsoil and staying with the mobil filter.

SuperNova76 05-16-2011 09:18 AM

Manual shows 5w30 and 10w30 are both acceptable for use. But that being said, its talking about conventional oil. And since they threw in the 100k bumper to bumper warranty for free it would be nice to not void it. But not only am i switching to amsoil i will the doing an oil analysis at every change from now on through Blackstone. So if something happens to the engine, which i highly doubt, i will have proof of every oil change on time, mileage, and any trend that may be present of wear. Ive have also heard that performing the oil analysis and have records of it can boost car valve if i every sold it. Not sure if thats true just what ive heard.

SuperNova76 05-16-2011 07:52 PM

So Amsoil filter or Oem?????

04caliwrx 05-16-2011 07:57 PM

^ i use the amsoil filter, I cut the 2 filters in half and the Amsoil one has a lot more 2 it!

I used to use Amsoil. It's a great oil but almost pretty pricey, I now use Rotella T6. Very good stuff at a affordable price.

SuperNova76 05-17-2011 10:03 PM

Never heard of it. Looked it up, did some reading. Everything i find says that the Shell Rotella T6 is a heavy duty synthetic oil specifically made for diesel engines. To each his own. But i think i like the sound of the Amsoil made for high reving turbo/super charged engines alot better. And for the deal im getting dont think i can beat it. Might be a couple dollars more per quart but getting free filters helps. And with the oil analysis maybe going a few more miles between oil changes also.
