help. silent det?
 

hi all. i got a few questions that i hope u guys don't mind answering.

my sti has been pinging since after break in. I got it to stop pinging by boosting octane using toluene, 100octane. Oh, i live in CA btw.
i was pretty happy about making the pinging go away...but someone recently gave me a scare by saying, "your car could still be detonating silently."
Is this true? should i be concerned about silent det.?

As long as i can get the pinging to stop, then the car is normal?
i haven't got the ping reflash yet because i don't have the time...and last time i asked my local subaru, they said they weren't prepared for it yet.

also, do you guys know how detrimental detonation is to the sti's engine? i'm just wondering if those past pingings i heard could have harm the engine in some way?

sorry so many questions...i'm just really worried about my new car =/

Ok ... I'm gonna kinda be a ******* here but

1. Any pre-ignition or too much advance on an engine is BAD.
2. How do you know there was det?
3. If you did have some device and it was not deting with 100 octane TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. Or if you have modded your sti....STOP!
4. Most people do not know what detonation sounds like (from ears). Why devices with gauges are totally awesome. And by totally awesome I mean totally sweet.

buttt i dunoo, im saving up to get it tuned, so hopefully after a month and a half or two months ill have saved up enough money:p

You need the Re-Flash for the late Sti release in CA----the dealer will do it. I bought my STi 2 months ago and it has the updated flash with no PING on 91 Octane. You should not have to run 100 anyways.
