Question about Intake
 

I have a Turbo XS intake on my 03 suby. I bought the car from the subaru dealership with the intake already on it. I was talking to someone with an STI at the track the other night and he told me without having my car tuned that intake is hurting my car. He told me to get a stock airbox for the car until i got it tuned. Can anyone relate to this?

Not all intakes are equal. There are a few purported to be compatible with the factory MAF sensor. These are the ones that are okay.

The factory airbox is not restrictive with mods such as mild turbo upgrades so why bother with an intake with a stock turbo? If an intake makes additional power to a stock engine with no other changes, I consider this to be a negative thing because it is likely achieving this by altering the signal that the MAF sensor is seeing. I think the proper way to do this is by utilizing real engine management that takes into account other factors such as modified exhaust, intercooler hoses, intercooler upgrades, upgraded turbos, etc.

Some members remove the silencer and the snorkel from the factory airbox but in my opinion, these mods do little or nothing. These pieces are not restrictive on mildly modified engines. Their removal causes no harm but will increase intake noise. Some people like the additional intake noise - more power to 'em. ;)
