PWR TMIC vs STOCK TMIC

Went to the track again last night and had my friends PWR TMIC... My best time with my current setup is 13.0@104 (Stock TMIC). With the PWR TMIC I was .2 Seconds SLOWER than with the Stock TMIC...

How could this be?

I made a total of 4 runs. 3 of the 4 had the exact same time 13.21 and my last run was 13.3? How could I be slower with a larger TMIC?

I have a Stage 4 (VF30) Setup...

My results in my 4EAT seem to always be better with the stock TMIC could this be due to my TXS Unichip not being mapped for a larger TMIC?

There are a lot of reasons you might be running a slower time, not all of them would be related to your TMIC. However, if you believe that you kept your launches consistant and shifted at the same points then, yes, the TMIC could be to blame.

You might want read SCC's Dec 2003 article on the APS Top mount that they installed on their project wrx. They found that the APS larger core actually increased temps by 12-14 degrees during full throttle accereration in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears, and that at the end of high-speed acceleration (4th gear 60-80 mph) the APS end temp was 5 degrees hotter again than the stock. Also, when first installed and and left un-tuned the car "dropped" 6 hp and 18 lb-ft of torque at peak. It was even worse at lower RPMs and the dyno numbers were erratic. The once fat midrange was replaced with a substantial bog and then a surge to the slightly lower hp and tq numbers. After 51 dyno pulls and losts of futzing with the knock sensor they gained only 10 hp gain at 5500-6000 RPMs, while the final peak numbers were nearly identical.

In short a larger intercooler core will not heat-up as quick as stock (called heat soak). But it also will not cool down as quickly either. So as you wait in line to be staged your IC temps will rise and may not cool back down by the end of your run. Also your MAF may very well detect a lean spot created from the larger mass of air coming from The IC and retard timing to compensate (as was the case w/ SCC's car). All this will rob power and result in slower times.

I have an AVO top mount that I installed on my vf22 w/ Vishnu Unichip (tuned for the stock TMIC) and my accelleration in cold weather became very lumpy. I even got detenation once under hard acceleration in 3rd gear. However, during the summer months, the AVO was a big improvement over stock, but until I get it re-tuned, I am staying with the stock TMIC.

I've got a 4EAT and yes all my launches are EXACTLY the same!

you could put all 3 times slips together and it has the exact numbers from top to bottom.

- I did read that article by the way :D

what boost were you running?

peak at 20 PSI

I have not had this TMIC tuned into my engine management yet but other people with the same setup (same engine management setup as well) used similar TMIC and they gained...

were you running race gas? maybe the ECU retarded the timing. 20psi is a bit high for a VF30, however, i think with race gas, it's very much usable power and boost. :) what octane were you running?

iNfEk 02-17-2004 10:34 AM

yup race gas was used (100 octane) :D

SsTiNgEr77 02-29-2004 08:03 PM

wow... 100 octane with a vf30 setup tuned? i'd say u should be high 12's not 13 flat ;o

get fmic... best way to go...

or get an intercooler sprayer for that top mount to cool it down before your runs

unfortunately I don't have the TMIC tuned so that could be the results...

I'm also saying that I'm in the 12's due to the Unichip not being able to keep my shifts smooth (I've got an upgraded VB and TC already)

We'll see if the AccessPort can make miracles happen!

You just need to give me that TMIC already Jon (for free that is).
Hope to see you at the track on Sat. :D

nope it hasn't been crowded on Fridays for a while... if it does get crowded it usually gets that way after 9pm. Saturdays are more crowded now since it's the weekend... let me know :D

13 flat on an auto...thats some good numbers. im jealous.
(insert stupid question here ;))
im sorry i dont have any good info to say.
