overboosting! ah help

ok i have a blitz dual turbo timer/ boost gauge. i used the peak hold display and i set it at .95 hkpa (13.8 psi) for the warning. every time i hit it i get above that, and my peak hold display says 1.07 hkpa!!!! WTF is there something wrong with my car or i just really hope that the turbo timer/boost gauge is really really unaccurate.

yea, a turbo timer is NOT the same thing as a boost controller.

-Ted

edit: 1.07 kpa is about the normal stock boost level for a WRX

edit again: I am not 100% sure, but I believe, that the boost display you are looking at is just for reference, so you can refer back to it later, to see what your maximum boost level was for the duration of your drive. This information is good for tuning the car, but doesnt actually regulate the boost pressure....you need a boost controller for that.

I have a Blitz DTT turbo timer and when I called Blitz USA they (like most people) said hkpa is the same as bar which would mean 1 hkpa=around 14.5psi. I have also seen companies claim it can read up to 2.5 hkpa (36.75psi) and that would mean that 1 hkpa=14.7psi so who knows for sure.

1 bar is 14.7 psi or one atsmophere, our atsmopheric pressure is 14.7 psi and then your adding another 14.7 to it with the turbo.

Is your car modded, where do you live, what is the temp and what elevation are you at? I live in St. Louis (around 550' above sea level) and I hit 1.10 hkpa (around 16 psi) with Cobb stage 2 so I would think you are boosting too high.

I'm no guru or anything but from what I have read 13.5 psi is the stock setting for a WRX and 14.5 for a STI. Cobb stage 1 has a boost target of 14.7 +/- .5 psi depending on vehicle and conditions. You are running close to what I am at stage 2 so I would hope your gauge is off if I were you.

Assuming 1hkpa=14.5psi

1.20 hkpa=17.4psi
1.32 hkpa=19.14psi

If 1 hkpa= 14.5 psi then all you need to do is multiply hkpa by 14.5 (psi) so 1.20X14.5=17.4. If your in the car and dont have a calculator near by just remember 1 hkpa=14.5 and for every .1 hkpa over or under 1 you add or subtract 1.45 psi.

107kPa = 15.5 PSI Stock is around 14.0 PSI, depending on what you read. Overboosting by 1.5PSI is no laughing matter.

Where is your Blitz boost line hooked up? At the BOV? At the ECU's source (just infront of the intake manifold)? What mods do you have? What where do you live (country, state) ?

Also, note that aftermarket gauges (even spiffy digital Blitz ones) are not reading what the ECU is, and what the ECU reads its what's important. I know this for a fact, as my Blitz Spec-R boost controller which also has the meter/peak/hold capability was ALWAYS 0.5 to 1.0 PSI off from my UTEC... and the UTEC reads the ECU's sensors. FWIW, readings seem at least a little more accurate when done from the intake manifold.
