a loud wining noise...

I have a 05 WRX and there is a loud wining noise coming from the engine area... I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this same thing?

Thats a pretty vague description! When does it occur? WHat speed? When decelerating? At idle?

Subaru all wheel drivetrains are louder and make different noises than 2wd cars. Lets say....youre in 2nd gear, off the gas and going down a hill at ~ 25-30 mph...if its that kind of whining its normal.

it happens a little at idle and increases as the rpm's do. I am pretty sure it is my a/c compressor.... just wondering if you knew or heard of this problem before with a subaru. I know what noise your talking about durring deceleration.

that use to happen to my car. Never found out what it was. But never really affected the car either. I did need to replace idler pulley though because it was damaged. So maybe thats whats causing the noise. Just take it to the dealership.

Bump on an old thread......had a problem happen this evening....and I'm freaked out. Did some "spirited" driving tonight on my way home playing with some STI on the freeway (he started it...I was just trying to get the "V"). Anyways. I was in fourth, upwards of 5-6k rpms (this was after a few pulls) and noticed that my car was whining pretty loud. I pulled off the freeway and parked the car, left the engine on, and checked under the hood. Didn't notice anything until I revved the engine a bit...and the whining noise was still there. I got back in the car and now everytime my boost gauge hits a vacuum of 10 or less, then it starts to whine....boost is still building like normal, but it's a sound I've never heard before and gets more high pitched as the boost increases. Car has about 80k on it, stock turbo, with catless uppipe, and catless tbe. Anything you can do to put me at ease would be very helpful....

can you pinpoint where the noise if roughly? ir have a friend rev the car... or drive around with a friend with the window slightly down and see what side the noise is dominant.

definitely coming from the engine bay. when I pulled over and popped the hood, I pulled on the throttle body cable and revved the engine a bit and heard it. When you're in the car, it sounds like its coming from right behind the gauge cluster almost...

Im guessing its your idler pulley.... but make sure about where the noise is coming from first. idler pulley is near the front of car by the grille. (sorry for the weak description) Cost me $50 bucks from napa and an easy fix. let me know if this is the problem. Hope this helps.....

I have an 04 WRX. I had a high pitched whining sound this past Christmas right before my tranny got shot to hell, had to get a whole new tranny and that put a fat dent in my wallet. If i were you, i'd get that checked quick.

ok....played around with the car today, and it doesnt appear that what Im hearing is the idler pully. did some searching on youtube for the sound that I was hearing, but its not a constant whine, its only when Im stepping on the gas (either in neutral or in gear...doesnt matter). Im thinking its very possible that its around the intercooler, but I dont know where to start looking.....

If the noise is coming from the intercooler area, I would say that it could be your uppipe leaking at the turbo, or maybe your downpipe leaking. I would even say that it is posible that your have some sort of leak on your intercooler. Try checking all the clamps on the intercooler hoses and the gasket around your blow off valve. I can't think of anything that would make that type of noise in the upper engine area.....Good Luck
