Knocking / Tapping sound in Engine
 

I have an 02 WRX, and it has started to get a tapping sound when it is running (from engine) popped the hood, and listened. It is consistent with revs. As the revs go up, the tapping sound gets louder and faster.
The check engine light has lit up now, and so I do not want to start the car.
Any suggestions for troubleshooting this? The car has oil, and i keep it regularly maintained. Maybe a piston broke off? (someone told me this...) i did not know this was possible?

Its hard to diagnose trouble without hearig it in pereson. High pitch ticking could be valvetrain trouble. Low knocking would suggest piston or rod damage. If you cant get help from your warranty, bring it to my shop! We're in Pleasant Hill. 925.676.2782

I think there is some bad gas roaming around. I recently got a loud fluttering sound from about 3000 to 4000 rpm. It sounds to me to be coming from the throttle body. Sounds like a really bad vibration. I heard it on the highway yesterday, thought it was coming from my brake install, further investigation lead me to the throttle body. Anyone got a fix for part throttle vibration?

It could be related to your bov. If its releasing boost presure than your throttle body will flutter.

I have a similar situation. I'm hearing ticking sound and the sound interval goes faster as I step on the gas. It almost sounds like putting a flexible tape hitting the fan. Is this injector sound in the cold weather? This is my first winter with this car.

it seems to be the lower tapping, not so much a ticking...
and i did notice loss of power... pretty signifigant loss. I was pretty nervous, so i stopped driving, and had the car towed.

1. start the car
2. put the e brake on
3. put the car in first gear and slowly let the ctutch out if the sound gets louder that means you have bottom end damage. If it goes away it means that the crank, rods, and pistons are fine.
4. if it gets louder do no drive it because it could let loose at any time

weird, this sound is similar to what i am hearing in my 97 ranger...it comes and goes, but as i accelerate it gets louder...ne ideas??
