HELP!! Tuning questions for replacing turbo

Hi Guys,

First off im apologize if this has been mentioned somewhere on this forum but i have been searching on here and did not find anything.

SO! long story short, My turbo took a crap and i had to replace to a new stock td04 on my 2002 bugeye wrx. I noticed on this new turbo after installing which only has 30K on it only gives me 6psi at most! A friend stated that i needed to tune my car. Now my million dollar question isss... If i get a cobb ap, Do i still need to tune my car? or will the AP be good enough to get my boost back to normal without having to open source tune it? Please any positive input is Greatly appreciated!!

id take it more as a: Look some more buddy!

BUUUT....save yourself the worries and get it tuned at a shop. Tuning is by far one the biggest reasons turbo engines fail prematurely. So simple too. GL!

Hi 02 Thanks for your input! i was thinking that as well but i was thinking if just getting a cobb ap right now to see if it will fix the issue that i have until i get a pro tune. Maybe ill just do the open source tune for now then. Thanks again man!

Who installed the turbo? What specifically happened to the last one (ie: damage this may have caused). What experience does your friend have? Overlooking hardware issues right off the bat does not bode well. Your app will be moot without functional ware to run it on.

Ok STOP!!!

If you replaced a tdo4 with a td04 you should be fine without a tune.

I am saying because imagine you took your car to suburu for a replacement. They would not tune your car.

I am thinking more along the lines of the restrictor pill was not replaced on the wastegate line causing it to open pre maturely and dumping boost, or a vaccum leak of some kind.

Did you ensure the turbo outlet elbow to the intercooler is tight, and there is no cracks on the inlet or intercooler piping. That stuff becomes brittle and can break when doing a replacement.

Hope that helps, but absolutely positively rule out the need for a tune or AP at this point.

tru this. i thought u upgrade turbos for some reason. but if u didnt, theres no reason for a tune until u overlook what Shayan mentioned. GL!

@ de, I installed the turbo myself with some help from a friend. When putting it all back nothing gave us any problems that i can see or tell. Everything went smoothly. My new td04 i can tell spools better and harder but i only get 5psi. So i asked a buddy and he said i needed to tune my car. Hence this thread cause i wanted to know if i should just do open source or cobb ap to fix that issue.

Thanks guys theres alot of stuff i still need to learn about this. Im sorry im a newb to wrx's. But man I LOOOOOVE my wrx!

@ Shayhan. The only hose i had to replace was the hose to the boost solenoid. The old one was brittle and snapped like a twig! other than that i checked all the hoses and vac lines and they seem fine still. The restrictor pill is still in good condition. Nothing old cracked or brittle.

After reading this I am going to lean more towards the restrictor pill. I am guessing you may have replaced the hoses when you did the job? Maybe you put new ones in?

There is supposed to be a restrictor pill in there google the image and it will show you where.

Shayhan, The td04 i put in was from a newer wrx with a 2.5l motor. Mine of course is a 2.0. Does that matter? Should i switch the restrictor pills?
