Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Turboback is from your turbo to the back of the car, catback is from the last cat to the back of your car. The turboback basically gets rid of the two cats that are after the turbo if you get a catless turboback. If you get a catback, it will not remove any of the cats in the car. All things being equal, the turboback will be louder. Here's a pic that will do a better job of explaining.

Your member Profile was incomplete so I'm assuming you drive a WRX since you're asking about a turbo back exhaust.

Cat back exhaust bolts to the flange behind the third catalytic converter and includes the muffler. All factory cats can remain in place with a cat back exhaust.

Turbo back replaces entire exhaust system after the turbocharger.

See Matt Randolph's exhaust diagrams.

If you want loud, you can get loud for the WRX. Loud, in many areas of the country equals citations for noise levels and modified exhaust. We don't know your general location (member Profile, again) so other members in your area can't relate their experiences...

If allyou want is loud I have heard that the Blitz Nur spec cat back is pretty loud. Spend the extra $ and get the turbo back you won't be sorry. Also remember "off-road use only". Take that how you want. If you have emiisions tests you may be screwd. Just search I-club for "exhaust" you will see some neat threads.

I just looked at your Profile again and i see that you are from Russia. That;s pretty cool. CHeck your local and "state"(not sure of the right term) laws regarding noise and emissions.

shibits - Yeah are you from Russia or do you live currently in Russia??

If you want HP gains then the Turbo Back is the way to go! Most Cat Backs will give you 8-13 HP gains. But adding the other pieces to the puzzle can gain you a total of 27+HP from exhausts like a Stromung 3in Turbo Back.

There are 4 pieces to the exhaust that make up what you are talking about....the Downpipe, cat pipe, midpipe, and rear muffler section. The Turbo Back is all of these because the downpipe connects to the Turbo. Then the Midpipe and Rear muffler make up a Cat Back. And then the Rear Muffler is the Axle Back.

Hope this helps! Let me know if I can do anything for you!

Thanks,
Brian

Id say to get a a decent muffler and bring it down to a muffler shop and see if they can build you a good exhaust system. I got my megan racing muffler and custom cat back on for around $200 and it sounds real loud and deep.

shibits - Yeah if you have the US spec WRX then if you get a Turbo Back or Cat Back then it will be a simple bolt up with no wielding or cutting of any sort. Now getting one could be tricky with shipping costs it could get expensive.

Hope this helps!

Brian

I just had mine installed. The shop charged me $80. I don't have alot of metric tools and getting the old exhaust out took a little work. New exhaust went in inabout 25 min. He has a lift. Depends on how much work you really wan to do. He evan gave me a year warranty in the install.

I love that MattRandolph diagram. I should print it, frame it and put it on my wall. It answers so many questions posted in this section.

wrx10404 - Wow that is not a bad deal on getting installed and then a 1yr warranty to boot. Glad you got it on and I hope that you have many drives of enjoyment out of it!

Thanks,
Brian
