Walbro Fuel Pump Users! Read This Thread!

If you have upgraded your fuel pump to a Walbro Fuel pump, please read this thread. You might have a problem brewing and might not even know it. The main cause of this problem may be associated with the use of the supplied Walbro strainer/pickup, and its smaller length not allowing the fuel pump to draw enough fuel from the tank when the fuel tank is lower than 1/4 tank, causing possible engine damage. Yes, its the white baggy. And I did read a lot of fuel pump write ups, and didn't remember any of them saying not to use the Walbro one. Oh well, the fuel pump is coming out next week. Damn I hate taking that thing out.

Thanks Kurlee. I for one really appreciate you bringing the technical highlights from ClubWRX to BAIC. This will save me a big hassle when installing my walbro eventually.

hmm.. we just installed my fuel pump last week and have had no problems. We did numerous runs on less then a 1/8th of a tank yesterday and today and didn’t skip a beat once.

When we took out the old pump I compared it to the walbro and the pickup and it was exactly the same (depth and the width of the pickup unit). I had issues with my eclipse when I built it and knew that it was a problem with the 3000 GT fuel pump assembly and just for kicks I check the one out for the WRX and it was the exact same dimensions.

by the sounds of it, looks like there might be a few different pickups out there, since some people have an issue with it, and others don’t

Yeah, possibly. Or defective pumps that don't pull enough gas? I don't know. I am going to take out the fuel pump and put the OEM pickup on it and see if it makes a differnce. It only makes the car run different when the gas level gets below 1/4 tank.

You are 100% right. I found a good link for a fuel pump install and it says right there in perfect English, to use the stock pickup/strainer:

http://www.quantum-racing.com/Quantu...%20Install.htm

My bad. I have to be real careful installing things next time. I am glad it didn't lead to full engine failure.

Your welcome Eric. Just trying to help people, like yourself, who already have, or are going to do the install to be informed. ClubWRX.net is a very good reference website to go to for technical car issues and such. Don't see why people are so against going there.

thanks for the heads-up, I'm installing my fuel pump in a couple weeks and I'll be sure to compare the pickup/strainer with the oem version. Probably post some pics while im at it.

Then Gino, what kind of problem do you see my car having? This is the only thing that I can think of that could be the cause. Or the Walbro fuel pump I have is defective. Please reply.

Thanks gino for the offer. I still have my stock pump and strainer, and am going to try the stock strainer and see if it makes a difference. If it doesn't then I will have to buy a new fuel pump.
