P0171 cel

got a 06 WRX with a stage 1 open tune source you can say and a CEL came up and scanned it saying bank 1 too lean. Could it just be a dirty MAF sensor or something more then that?

who did your tune?

Nice write up! I checked it out and had to replace the MAF sensor and now the CEL is gone. Another thought, i got a K&N short ram intake in it and does that cause the MAF to burn out quicker due to more air flow or should i say "lean" in an increase of more air flow?

Glad to hear you fixed the code. I've been running a higher flowing intake since 2003 and am still using the stock maf, so I dont think increased air flow would cause it to burn out quicker. Also, as long as the car is tuned for that particular intake, you wont run lean because the car will add more fuel to compensate for more air (which is how you extract more power from adding a hi-flow intake). Aftermarket intakes can cause issues since the air moves by the maf differently than the stock intake (due to bend positions/pipe diameter/etc).

If you didnt get tuned with your current intake, that could cause problems. The only aftermarket intakes said to be ok to run without tuning (or re-tuning) for are the Cobb and SPT, unless there's more out now that I'm unaware of. You could run the stock intake with a k&n panel filter as well. Some people claim that you're likely to gunk up your maf with oil type filters (which could have contributed to yours failing). But I'm using the Cobb, which uses a k&n element, and haven't had any issues. I'm under the impression that as long as you don't over oil the filter, and wait the recommended amount of time before reinstalling, that oil filters are fine. But, that's because I haven't had a problem with them -yet-. If you aren't tuned to be running that intake (and don't want to get re-tuned) I'd switch to a different setup or do some research to see if the k&n you're running is made to read the same as the stock intake.
