I think I've found the secret power hack into the STi ecu...like the rear defrost trick on 02/03 WRXs.
I followed the steps below and was surprised by the result.
Anyway, here's what I did:
1. On a warm engine, apply parking brake.
2. Start engine, do not step on brake pedal.
3. Slowly, bring up engine rpm to 5000rpm.
4. Hold @ 5000rpm for about two minutes.
Please report back your results so I can confirm this procedure.

No Oaf, I think your right... You can duplicate the effect with your old, early model Nintendo controller! There is an access port below your steering wheel - take the Nintendo plug and push it into the access port. If it doesn't fit, push harder. If it still doesn't fit, take a soft rubber mallet and smack it to make it fit. The rubber mallet will prevent you from hurting your old Nintendo controller.
Once you make it fit, use the following control sequence.
1) Up
2) Up
3) Down
4) Down
5) Left
6) Right
7) Left
8) Right
9) "B"
10) "A"
11) "Select"
12) "Start"
The best part of this is that you not only get the power that you are reporting but you also get 99 lives! Seriously, I have crashed 16 times now and I just keep being reborn!
