"Unwinding" Sound?
 

Let me set the mood really quick...

I just turned right at a busy intersection, after completing the turn I shift from 1st to second gear and speed up to ~25mph. As Im looking down the road a bit, I see im coming up to a stop sign so i let off the gas and just coast for a couple seconds. Immediately after letting off the gas, the car does something like a "buck" or a kick when I let off. Anyways, now Im giving the car no gas and coasting to slow my roll. I happen to have my music down to a manageable level and I hear this strange "unwinding" type sound coming from what seems to be my tranny.. It does this at a noticeable volume in second, and sometimes third gear..

anyone know whats up with that? I just had my 90k maintenance done at SpeedElement not even 2k miles ago.. Your input is appreciated!

Without hearing it, I can't say for sure, but it sounds like what I just had on mine a few weeks back. From your description, it sounds like the same type of sound, mainly in 3rd and 4th on mine but with the music off and under light load, you could hear it in 2nd and 5th also. Took it to the dealer and turned out to be the bearings in the center differential going out. Problem is, they have to take it apart to confirm something like that, at which point you are already looking at a lot of cost. Mine was covered under warranty, but the total bill was $1900, so I hope that isn't what it is! I had my 90K done about 6 months ago.

Does it shift fine? Do you have problems on 1-2 or 2-3 shifts? Could be synchros in the trans or even just the clutch. Syncros are still going to be expensive and clutch not cheap, but not as bad as diff or trans.

That dosent sound too good.. Shifting is fine, clutch still functions good.. Bearings seems to be a viable thing to look into. Thanks for the reply

Yeah, so mine shifted fine too which is why I took it in. I've had a throw out bearing go out in my clutch in a previous car and that is exactly what this sounded like, mainly on deceleration. Except that with the T/O bearing, you would feel it when shifting so I knew that wasn't what it was. I took it to Mann Engineering and had their mechanic ride with me to listen to it and he said sounds like trans, at which point they said the same thing - gotta take it apart to find out for sure unfortunately. Sorry bro and good luck with it. I'd see if you can have a shop listen to it and maybe they can give you an idea too.
