If you're referring to the 'thump' sound from the rear of the chassis, it is a snubber deal that cushions the differential as the nose rises under heavy acceleration.

Don't pop the clutch out so fast...that thump is the rearend trying to depart the car....be more smooth or second gear may be the next thing to go 'thump' and be gone.

Let the clutch come all the way back up and THEN stomp it
No speed shift with AWD.

It's not lame. You can still shift quickly but it takes skill to do it without abusing the drivetrain. The WRX wasn't designed for clutch dumps, speed shifting, etc.

If you slam gears and pop the clutch at high revs things break in a rex or in any car.

Be nice to her.

There is a way to drive quickly smoothly. A little clutch finess can work wonders and is much better on your car than 5000 rmp clutch drops. Feed that clutch baby.

yeah I get this too when I'm accelerating hard and I mishift sometimes... I always thought it was the rear differential working hard...

....an arguable statement without proof, but I agree it could be a contributing factor in premature failures.

Folks just need to realize that the chances of a failure will increase when you use abusive shifting techniques. Personally, I don't "speed shift" my WRX or launch it hard (i.e. no weekend trips to the drags). I may not be able to achieve the 0-60, 1/4 mile times posted in Motor Trend magazine, but I never figured I could without being abusive. I'm still able to have loads of fun with my car and I can row through the gears relatively quickly without beating on my tranny. The WRX doesn't respond well to an overly-aggressive touch.

If you're gonna play.....you gotta pay.
