Reverse is about to go

Well, you normally hear that first or sometimes second gear is the first to go in subys. But my reverse is making the most obnoxious noise when I back up. So tomorrow I will be calling Subaru of SC to get an appointment to get it checked out.
Anybody out there that has had tranny problems ever had problems with reverse? 1st gear is perfectly fine, its just reverse. I will keep you guys updated on what they find and what they intend to do for me.

hopefully they dont give you the story that "well...reverse is kinda funny on these cars" buncha bull. I've heard its a straight cut gear so its hard to get into (takes me 4 or 5 tries) but if it's whining really loud, I would have it checked out. good luck. at least, as I've come to find out, as long as its been a documented problem prior to something breaking, they usually stand by the warranty work.

What's it doing? Like DOCammin said, reverse is straight cut so it is normal for it to whine...

It seems odd for reverse to go out unless it's a manufacturing defect, in which case I would have guessed you would have experienced problems almost immediately. Let us know what the dealer says.

Check the gear oil level if you haven't already. I can tell when mine gets low by the loudness of the reverse and 1st gear whine. The oil gets low magically, in spite of the dealers insistence that it's not gear oil all over my front halfshafts, and my diff isn't leaking.

I havent checked my gear oil in about 1.5 months. So yesterday i checked itm I was almost BONE DRY! I filled it up half way just to make my car driveable. I am still taking it in tomorrow for the oil change and to get it checked. I know it has gotten warm because its summer but damn. Should i be burning gear oil like that? I checked for leaks and couldnt find any. I hope suby doesnt just say" its because you had low gear oil" and just fill it up and send me off. It is still making the noise and i know i have more problems than low gear oil. I will let you guys know how it goes. wish me luck.

Gear oil is the manual transmission oil right? Right below the top mount?

as of now, they acknowledge that reverse sounds funny. So now they r going to take apart my tranny and see if i only need reverse replaced or if the whole tranny needs to be replaced. I'm hopin they just replace my tranny so i wont have to come back in about 4 months becuase first gear went out. I will keep you posted as to what they will do to it in the end. Pray for my car!

I just called the dealership and they said that " Reverse can be a noisy gear so we are going to replace all the reverse parts with the latest and greatest updated ones!" Ok, if it was just noisy then why not tell me that and say its fine? Obviously there is a problem because they are spending money to fix it, no?
They also told me that they are replacing 3rd & 4th gear because they just came out with updated parts for these two gears so they are going to put them in. This also scares me because I go by the saying "if it aint broke don’t F with it". So why are they "updating" my parts if there isn’t a problem. I have never heard of a dealership that was so nice to update your parts to the newest one's when you went in for service.

Any opinions?

You'll be glad to have the new gears. Don't stress, it's sounds like you actually have a pretty good service department to go to.

ok, I'll take a breather then. I guess Subaru of Santa Cruz does have the best service department in California like they state.

dude, SSC is one of the best dealers in the state along with carlsen. they are replacing the gears because the new ones are stronger. you could always tell them not to and then lose your car for another week or two when it breaks later. i would get those stronger gears in a second if i could. especially for free!! so don't give bruce and the guys any grief, they are actually doing you a huge favor. be nice, flash a smile, and make sure they know you're thankful. that's what those guys live for.
