ppg gears
hey i just blew up my 3rd gear racing at laguna today. im going to be getting a new gear set and heard of PPG gears. i was going to get RA cryo treated gears but heard these PPG gears are better. any advice?
|
PPG gears will be M U C H stronger than an RA set....although the price of PPG's are M U C H more than an RA set.
What mods/power levels are you at? |

definitely good info to know before we give any more advice. Treated RA gears are much stronger than stock but they do still have their limits. If you are below the upper limits that the RA gears can handle, theres no point in buying more than you need |
PPGs or 6 speed depends on what you do with your car.
Those are the only two options you should be considering. RA gears aren't that much stronger than stock usdm gears. |

RA gears are not that much stronger than stock TREATED RA gears are much stronger
Not stronger than going PPG or STi 6 Speed. People will still blow treated RA Gears. I don't think they can handle the abuse of road racing or the drag strip. |
Gruppe-S treated RA Gears are good up to 350whp, think he's pushin more than that? True, people will blow treated RA gears, I already said that. I also said that they will hold more power than stock and if he isn't pushing over 350whp, why spend twice as much or even more?
IAPerformance.com treated gearsets are also rated for 350whp/350wtq |
IMO, the RA gearset is perfect for the 2.0L.... and the 2.5L needs something like the PPG or 6-speed since there is much more torque being made.... Or start with a more capable platform...*cough* STi *cough* ;) ....transmission swaps are expensive and can cause headaches down the road if its not installed properly. Plus, if you ever sell the car, you would be bummed on losing your PPG or 6-speed and parting out would be another headache.
It really comes down to your budget and goals. |
Yah, but how well will the RAs take the abuse? Doesn't matter what he is making, with the PPGs he can pretty much grind every gear with now worries.
I say PPGs so you won't have to worry about every shift you make. Thats if you have the money. |
oh, and here are prices from IAPerformance.com
treated RA gearset:$1575 ($2240 with new bearings and new syncros) STI full drivetrain:$7000 |
STI full drivetrain:$7000
Yeah, imo installing the 6-speed into a wrx is just not worth it (unless you can install/gather parts yourself). I contemplated building up my 2002 wrx wagon to a 2.5L and 6-speed but the more I thought about it the more it didnt make any sense. Now dont get me wrong, I'm not dogging anybody for putting a 6-speed or PPG set in a wrx, its just doesnt make sense for me. |
are the PPG gears the same ratios as stock just stronger? Or does it change the ratio and strength?

Both straight cut ppgs much more stronger... |

straight cut ppgs much more stronger...
know what the ratios are? EDIT: nevermind, looks like from at least some places you can select any ratios you want, however they ran about $4500 for gears 1-4 before shipping Perhaps you're overlooking something here. Would you use a 5 ft breaker bar to open a water bottle? You could, but its overkill. Just like if he has the power that can be help by treated RA gears, it's overkill to get PPG's or a 6-Speed |
I wouldn't say its overkill. If he's going to road race or drag race. I would recommend something more than just RAs. So he can bang through the gears without worrying about them popping.
Well I'm pretty sure he went with RAs anyway so we'll see what happens then. |
