Check.
The.
Spider.
Gears.

They're the gears inside the different carrier.
All it takes is one broken tooth on one gear.

You'll need the help of a friend to hold one or the rear wheels while you spin the opposite wheel.

I think (not that I know diff noises) but do you have a lightweight flywheel? if it was side or pinion gear noises it would do it in or out of gear ? but because you said it dont make the noise out of gear is weird. if not pm me and you can bring it to my work Ill look at it.

boxerfxt 07-18-2010 10:40 AM

does it do only on decel in gear? here you go put it in third gear and let the car decel and while its making the noise push in the clutch. bet it goes away. lmk.

[QUOTE=Knifey;2901782]

It DOES NOT happen on accel, it DOES NOT happen on decel in neutral, it happens in every gear when there is no throttle input. The slightest throttle input will make it stop. Hitting the brakes also sometimes makes it stop.

does it have a lightweight flywheel? sounds like harmonics transfered through
the flywheel to the transmission is should be rpm specific

stupidchicken03 07-18-2010 09:57 PM

i know that knifey's car is stock (at least last time i talked to him)

boxerfxt 07-19-2010 06:16 AM

then idk maybe transmission troubles? I doubt its rearend issues

Knifey:

Please bring the car in so I can listen to the noise.
Won't cost you anything but time.

Knifey 07-21-2010 02:15 AM

Ok, I can make it in Thursday morning, sorry I haven't been watching this thread, been real busy.

@boxerfxt: Yes, it does go away.

And yes, my car is still 100% Stock. And it is really really sounds like it IS a rear end noise, I even had a friend sit back there and he confirmed it sounded like it was coming from the trunk area.

kbeetz 08-03-2010 09:00 PM

Did you ever find out what was causing the grinding noise? BTW I didnt know we had a tranny dipstick where is it located?

Gancherov 08-04-2010 09:33 AM

The tranny dipstick is sticking out of the transmission case between the turbo and intercooler, maybe...8 inches out from the firewall.

C 007 11-15-2010 11:23 AM

I have had a rear end go out on my 442, and it is definitely not a pretty sound. But the fact is, that is still made a horrible sound in and out of gear. My car has made that same grinding sound with 2 of my clutches which I didn't take to a reputable shop. If it was the transmission itself, I have a feeling it would make noise in or out of gear since things are still in motion due to your wheels spinning while slowing down even in neutral. In my experience, it was a poorly installed or crafted throw out bearing. IT rattles when the car was in neutral and my foot not on the clutch pedal and makes a shipwreck of sounds on decel. So possibly could be that bearing.
