CV joints? *scared*

My front 2 CV's have been making a knocking noise as of late, so i took a gander under there and saw that the rubber bootys are off and so i assume they need to be replaced, wich i plan on doing myself.
My question is; will this be hard or easy? and what will i need for tools?

If your hearing a knocking or popping sound then the boots have likely been ripped for some time and all the gear has already been spun out of the joint. Basically now its too late to do just the boots so you will have to change the CV joints also. Whenever you work on your car consider checking the boots to be a preventative maintenance thing.
If you've never done one and can't find somebody local to help you then consider taking it to a mechanic to have it done. Its kind of hard to explain over the internet. With other types of cars its cheaper and easier to buy a remanufactured axle since it comes complete with new joints and boots. It just depends on the make and model of car. Check into the prices first.

Check with a parts place like Advanced Autoparts to see if they sell an entire remanufactured axle. I know on a friends car the whole thing was $45 and it made it alot easier to just change the axles. Not sure if they offer them for Subarus but its worth a look.

It is pretty easy.
You take them off, remove the boot. Clean the joint. Knock the joint apart, slide new boot, fill it up with grease, close it and clamp it.
For 2 boots, thats about a 2 hour job.

Just changed mine the other day.
Take the wheel off
Take the bolt of the hub
There are 2 pins that have be removed
Pin on the axle that needs to removed also
pull axle out
put axle in and replace pins
i had to take the bottom mount of the strut out to get the axle out but i am not sure if you have to one your car.
It depends on the year and model.
axles are like $100 at Pepboys or autozone

Yep thats usually much easier then screwing with the rest of it. When I was in Japan you couldn't get a whole assembled axle for anywhere near that amount so you were forced to do the CV joints. Here in the US its just much easier and cheaper to get the entire shaft. For $60 its worth it to have things that simple.
