AWD differences through the years & impreza/GL AWD wagon questions
High, I am new and currently drive a 4 door 1.8T VW golf. 
My insurance is going sky high and I need to sell it and pickup a used car, after ruling out BMW e30's in 325is form due to mileage and price plus cost of ownership, along with DSM's for the same reason i've taken a liking to early 90's impreza's.
I want something RWD or AWD, and decided that it's AWD or nothing now. After beating an ex girlfriends totally ****ty abused legacy wagon a few years back the AWD bug bit me(funny enough her wagon literally rusted apart from the maine salt & snow... the rear end fell down one day!) I could push that car harder in the wet on twisty roads than anything I had ever driven including a highly modified 16v Scirocco I owned at the time... The wagon felt heavy too but was a force to reckon with....
I like Audi, but my pocketbook and insurance don't agree, I also don't like the weight of most audi's.
I am having difficulty finding one cheap with a 5spd in my area however, and I do have a few options to get older AWD GL wagons cheap. I plan on boosting whatever scooby I end up with eventually, coilovers as well, polyurethane bushings all around etc, so I wonder which models have durable gearboxes and what nuances to look out for when seeking a used AWD subaru.
Is there a huge difference in torsional rigidity between a GL wagon and a impreza?
Are there any AWD drivetrain differences throughout models and years? What does a GL AWD wagon weigh compared to like a 90's impreza 4 door AWD? Do both use the same system for AWD? Does the older XT & XT turbo use the same AWD system, are any more prone to failure from excessive torque shock when boosted? Do early 90's impreza's rot bad? Do the front & rear diffs do any torque biasing between wheels when they slip? Does quaife make an aftermarket set of diff's for the front & rear of these cars? Do these cars eat drivetrain parts like breakfast after certain power levels?
I'm trying to edumacate myself but have been having trouble finding technical resources and etc. on these models.....
