automatic transmission on WRX

Quick question:
my friend has an automatic transmission on his WRX and he told me it is ok to be driving and while moving to shift to lets say 2nd gear and back up to drive again. I told him he should come to a complete stop before doing that. Can anyone tell me what is the proper way to shift on an automatic? Do you have to stop first? or just shift on the fly?
thank you.

From my experience (Not any Subaru Auto Trannys, but several others) It is fine to drop the gear down in the auto to a point.
Example.
You are in Drive cruising at 65mph , a big hill is approching, turn overdrive off, shift to 2nd (or whatever the next lowest selection is) get to the crest of hill, back to drive (or overdrive) all is good.
Not good -- Cruising at 45mph, a ricer with the hazards on pulls up next to you, you drop it to first to "smoke him"
Overall, for autos, "dropping" the gear while moving is fine, as long as there is a legit reason for it (hill climbs....) to keep the rpms and power up. Just lower it one shift at a time. Overdrive off, then drive to 3 (or 2 depending on tranny). Stopping at the gear that keeps the car moving decent.
Bad, Throwing the tranny down to it's lowest gear just because you think it gives you the "edge"

most AT's wont go into the lower gear if your rpm is too high for that gear even if the lever is in that gear.
it's okay to shift AT's. i like to blip throttle before each downshift
to make sure the motor and wheels are rev matched. just to get a smooth downshift. if you get really good at it, you can use both
feet and brake /blip throttle at the same time as MT does heel/toe.

I have a 4EAT and I will tell you from experance, you can not hurt it. It will not really let you do somthing that will kill it. As fare as wear and teat I will can I have had my car for about a year and a half and not one problem yet.
this is what i know...
from stop:
1st, start from 1st
2nd, start from 2nd
3rd, start from 1st
4th, start from 1st
while rolling:
1st, depending on speed and rpm, may or may not shift into 1st
2nd, no matter what, it locks into 2nd
3rd, same as 1st
4th, same as 1st

the shift lever pulls/pushs a cable which connects to a switch on the side of the auto tranny. it basically controls the fluid flow inside the tranny, which allows shifting of gears. BUT, it make it LOCK into gear, it's control by the A/B Soleniods. They get the final call on whichs gear to lock into. And they are control by the TCM (transmission control module).
So by spec, if you shift into 1st while going 60 mph, it won't shift. But I've never actually tried it before... 2nd gear is the only gear i know that would actually lock when you shift.
So bottom line, it doesn't matter (mostly) because it's control by the TCM (supposely).
