this is what i know...
from stop:
1st, start from 1st
2nd, start from 2nd
3rd, start from 1st
4th, start from 1st

while rolling:
1st, depending on speed and rpm, may or may not shift into 1st
2nd, no matter what, it locks into 2nd
3rd, same as 1st
4th, same as 1st

the shift lever pulls/pushs a cable which connects to a switch on the side of the auto tranny. it basically controls the fluid flow inside the tranny, which allows shifting of gears. BUT, it make it LOCK into gear, it's control by the A/B Soleniods. They get the final call on whichs gear to lock into. And they are control by the TCM (transmission control module).

So by spec, if you shift into 1st while going 60 mph, it won't shift. But I've never actually tried it before... 2nd gear is the only gear i know that would actually lock when you shift.

So bottom line, it doesn't matter (mostly) because it's control by the TCM (supposely).
