Maybe he was waiting for you to pace and then count off. That's what I would've done. Other wise its just the element of surprise. And in a WRX, surprise is worth twice the MPH (no wheelspin)
A race ain't a race unless you start from a dead stop or you both are at top speed... of course there are exceptions, like when someone's on your tail in the twisties and when you hit the straits its a while before you see him again. But this doesn't seem like one of the exceptions.
