South-central PA: 1995 Subaru Legacy LS (sedan, white, 4EAT)
Hey all.
My wife and I recently purchased a 2001 Outback LL Bean wagon, to replace her 1995 Legacy LS sedan. We are now selling the LS, and I wanted to list it on NASIOC and elsewhere. Details will be followed by lots of photos.
121,548 mi. as of today. Car is an automatic, white exterior, brown interior (cloth). LS includes sunroof, power windows/locks. Manual height adjustment on driver's seat. Cruise control, OE tape deck (works well, speakers do too), tilt steering wheel. Four Subaru all-season, rubber floormats (grey, supplied by me after purchase). Driver's mat is separating somewhat at one edge, otherwise all are in great shape. All windows work great, no leaks in them or the sunroof.
All interior lights/gauges work. A couple of handle/clips missing off of the heater/AC vents (junkyard-replaceable, easily). We installed Subaru OE projector driving/foglamps after we bought the car. Very bright!
Brand new EverStart (group 35) battery.
Engine bay is very clean, I always use Simple Green. PCV valve replaced not more than two months ago. Plugs and wires replaced with OE parts (NGK copper) around the same time, early summer. Air filter replaced within six months. Oil changed regularly with non-synthetic 10/5W-30 depending on temperature. 2.2L engine, unsure of the power but I think it's around 125-135chp. Not fast on the highway, but does very well in its own right.
Solid engine, never had a single CEL except for one last weekend. It cleared on the same day, I think it was temporary vapor lock. 87 octane used, and I've run a few bottles of valve cleaner through the tank. Put a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in with the last oil change, for good measure.
Problems are few, but worth noting:
1. Wheels are OE 15" alloys, in rugged shape. It was a big deterrent, but we needed to buy the car quickly (my wife had been in a car accident with her old Chevy--you know the insurance game). Structurally they're fine, but lots of curb rash. Easy to replace and likely very cheap. You could probably score a free set from someone on the forums, or at least under $150/set or so.
2. Brakes make a strange noise when you stop at slow speeds. Electrical/mechanical in nature, sort of an electrical grinding noise. Goes away completely when you pull the ABS fuse. I bet it's a bad wheel sensor, just haven't replaced it yet.
3. There is also a very slight burning smell on occasion. Found a very small oil leak on top of the exhaust headers -- my guess is that, since it's 10 years old, the forward engine/oil gaskets need replacing.
4. Some small rust spots. One on top of each rear wheel fender, common spots for older Subies. Small one on the trunk lid lip. Some black scuff marks and all the regular things to be expected. No really noticeable dents.
Tires were in very rough shape, replaced with a better set. Cobra a/s tread, about 1/2-2/3 worn. You can easily get another 6-12 months out of them, with non-aggressive driving. All are wearing evenly - had the wheels aligned a year ago.
Brakes work well. Rotors and pads look old but passed inspection just fine. PA inspected and emissions-tested through 2/06. No excessive noises from the exhaust, which is stock. I have a WRX axleback I was going to install on the car, in my garage. Yours free if you want it. No midpipe. A 2.0-2.25" midpipe would add great throttle response!
Upholstery was just professionally cleaned last week. Only a couple worn spots on the driver's seat, but all other cloth is fantastic. Four small holes (see pic) on the passenger's side of the center console, looks like it was one of those old style cellphone mounts. There when we bought the car.
I've kept the vinyl with Vinylex at regular intervals. Dash is in extremely good shape, as is the steering wheel and surfaces. Ceiling/headliner is great. NO SMOKING IN THIS CAR, at least by us. CarFax is clean, we checked it too.
