I've owned this car for 9 years and put a lot of miles on it from commuting and from trips to Tahoe. Overall its been an excellent vehicle an rarely given me problems. I was planning to keep it as long as possible and push it to 400k but the timing belt snapped on my way to work January 20th this year. I've put a ton of work into this Forester over the course of my ownership. The engine has been out 3 times and all the small annoying things were fixed gradually over time. Currently its on a second engine which I purchased from Rancho Cordova (have receipt). When installing the replacement engine I did change out the timing belt and all pulleys. For whatever reason the belt (Gates brand) decided to fail with only ~70k on it.

At this point I don't have time anymore to be pulling the engine again and fix it. Ready to move onto something else. Most likely the valves are bent so it will need top end work. Fortunately I do have a spare set of EJ251 heads with only ~35k on them, still very fresh. I can include these at an additional cost (see below). My recommendation would be pull the engine out, get my spare set of heads decked w/ new head gaskets and put it all back together. This would get you back up and running faster than repairing the existing heads.
