Subaru Impreza 22B-STi, Anybody own or even seen one?

This was actually one of the reasons I first really got into Subarus like four years ago. But the thought about owning one was never put into my mind. These things were not sold in the U.S. and were like $200,000. At least not until the WRX came out. This is basically a streetable rally car in wich only 400 were made.

So my question is does anybody here own one? Has anyone driven one or been in one? Seen one?

They actually were affordable as supercars go. I think they were the equivalent of $40K US. Not sure though. I do remember they were a lot cheaper than the M3 it was most compared to. You are right though, they never imported them to the US.

marc_mun 12-28-2003 07:53 PM

oh yeah about the price, I didn't specify what currency. So yeah you are right about price. sorry.

JspecGC8 12-30-2003 01:26 AM

Last time I seen one for sale the price on it was 5million4hundred thousand yen. There is also one on base. You cannot mistake it for any other Rex. Totally beautiful!!

AzN121184 12-30-2003 08:56 AM

Maybe not that one, but i actually think someone on the board has a GC8 STi do a search for him...his car has been imported and is street legal.

They were not 200,000 man thats Ferrari territory!!

Spec C 12-31-2003 03:46 AM

Hmm, as far as I knew, the 22b had the fenders and bumper that was never released for regular GC8 as OEM

Not that it makes it any less cooler :D
definately one of those cars I dream about every night~

ivbdn 12-31-2003 03:58 AM

I'd love to see one of those in person. Those things are awesome!

WRXPRESS 12-31-2003 09:11 AM

I have seen two and have sat in both of them. They are pretty cool. The magic of the 22B has dimmed a bit since I now own an STI. Not too many differences in my eyes. I do however like the old gc-8 style better.

Beatiful car tho.

You all are very close. I actually have a magazine that is printed in japan for wrx enthuseist. the b22 is a limited edition of 400-500 made. And none of those made it to this side of the ocean. I think there were a handful sold in the u.k. on the grey market. the b22 is close to the sti r/a ( rally altered) edition. The way you can tell it is a b22 is the fenders are more flared out than the original gc8. The fog lights are little different( can't remember, I have to look later) the engine is 2.2 liters and the rear wing is adjustable. And there are couple more monor things that you can notice. It is claimed to have 280 hp. But I am sure, like the GT-R it is way detuned. As you know the manufacturer and the government has a gentleman's agreement not to produce a car that can produce more than 280 hp. And I do own a jdm GC8 sti from japan. It is the first edition. I will post gain on the magazine articale when I find it.

22b sti..... hm none here... but.... u can build ur own!!! well as far as i know, there's that body kit for 1,200$ or so.... 'and' the engine is a 2.2 L, so I'm guessing you can get similar power potential from the 2.0 wrx engine swap put in with an sti shortblock or watever.

-----

that's my goal ... taking it one step at a time.

Spec C 01-01-2004 03:16 AM

It's kind of a more novelty item in my eyes, except the 2.2 Displacement. I love the flared fenders. The foglights are kinda triangle shaped *or the foglight covers rather*

Not sure but the 22b Might come equiped with some things like AC and other luxaries, which Type RAs don't.

Any idea where you have seen the body kit for $1200? we are looking for one.

I have seen a couple of 22b's in person in the UK and can say they are like the holy grail of the Impreza range. According to a copy of the Aussie magazine Speed I have there is going to be a new version of the 22b released referred to at this time as the WRCar

Those rear wide fenders are not body kits, it's the actual sheet metal that modified to make it wider at the factory.
There was one in USA when Subaru launched 99RS in 1998.
It was owned by Subaru but I think it was detroyed already.
On original i-club, there was some pictures of 22B that was in US.

Speed Element 01-01-2004 11:59 PM

I think everyone knows they are not body kits on the original 22b, but some of us are trying to build something similar is all.

I have had one of the 22b's and although they are a nice motor i do prefer the p1 for performane and handling.

Well the first time I saw the 22B was at a meet at Motorweek's PBS studios in Maryland. That was about 4 or 5 years ago. There was a great turn out. The car was so nice, left side drive, the adjustable diff was so trick. Everyone who showed up was allowed to sit in the car and have a look at it. I have pictures, video and the motorweek episode on tape.
The second viewing of the 22B was just this past October at the Glanzmann(dealer) meet in Jenkintown pa... Still beutiful with those flaired fenders and that rich blue paint color.

sigh....

I would love to see them come out with a new version as a coupe.

david2z4 01-02-2004 03:22 PM

Subaru of America has one or had one.

Cherry Hill, NJ

thebankman 01-02-2004 09:21 PM

That little car is sweet it looks like a 2.5 USDM

Cannon_Fodder 01-15-2004 09:20 PM

i have driven one here in OZ, very nice. don't forget the centre diff is adjustable. and they made 400 but one ended up at the bottom of the harbour. one of the lads took it for a spin and droped it into the drink.

SlickmisterN 01-15-2004 09:43 PM

Does anyone know how much the 22B weighs?

I've seen one in Hong Kong. I was shocked and tried to catch up to it to talk to the owner, but to no avail... he dusted me in my uncle's Integra

mopho 01-16-2004 04:05 AM

Nice car, it got me into Subaru's as well. But according to Evo magazine and other British car mags the P1 is better, stating that the 22b is too uncomprimising. Still pretty in a rally car kind of a way. I believe there is a few in the States, I know there is one in Colorado as I saw it at the Subie show at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb ( I believe it is owned by the local dealership owner)

The current STi is higher spec
